Chapter One: Unexpected Windfall

I walk Terri to the door of our small apartment and smile before giving her a kiss. Have fun picking at other people’s teeth, I joke.

She grins. Honestly, I’d rather pick at someone else’s teeth than my own. At least I don’t have to worry about my gag reflex when I do that. My wife, a dental assistant for the last five years, is good at her job. It’s the reason the dentist she works for occasionally gives her small bonuses for performance. We have been thankful for the money, but between the two of us things sometimes get a little tight. That’s why I am hoping that my Bitcoin investments will turn into something bigger one day.

I’ll be at the restaurant until close tonight. I guess I’ll see you when I get home.

Terri rolls her eyes. Yeah, and you’ll smell like rolls and fried foods too. We both laugh and then kiss again. Have a good day, baby.

You too, my love. My wife turns and steps into the hallway before closing our apartment door behind her.

I have a couple of hours before I have to get to the restaurant. As the manager, I do have some flexibility in my working hours, but unfortunately we are a bit short handed at the moment. So, I’ve recently found myself having to fill in where normally there would be another cook or dishwasher. This situation shouldn’t last long, but I’m responsible for the restaurant succeeding. If it means that I wash a few dishes, then I will wash a few dishes.

Sitting down at the dining room table, I decide to open up my laptop and check the Bitcoin prices for the day. I’ve been excited recently to see that the value for what I have has been going up steadily. One Bitcoin is currently worth more than thirty thousand dollars, so I own only a fraction of a share of it, along with several other people. I could cash in and see a small profit, but then again I have been advised to hold the course. So, I think I shall do just that.

Each morning, as has become my habit, I check our bank account as well. So, while sipping my coffee, I type in the password and wait for the account screen to load. I nearly choke on my drink as I put down my coffee cup and look closer at the screen.

What the fuck? I mutter while looking at the account balance. No way. I move the cursor on the laptop screen and click through a few things. Something’s not right. This can’t be real. Swallowing hard, I make my way back to the account overview screen. Where the hell did that hundred-thousand come from? On most days, we have around two to three thousand dollars in our bank account. Today, however, the account balance total is over one hundred thousand dollars. Never have we had so much money at once in our bank account.

I know there’s something wrong. A banking error, maybe? I scroll through the page and find a help tab. After opening the chat dialogue box, I request to speak to a bank teller online. It takes only a minute or so to get one.

Hello, this is Jason with First National Bank. How may I help you today, Layden? Good, he can see my account. Maybe he can help me resolve whatever has happened.

Hey, Jason. I have a question about my account balance. Is there any way that you could verify it for me? My heart races as I finish typing the message to the bank teller.

Sure, I can do that. For security purposes, can you give me your six-digit PIN? I respond in the box below his message and send it through. Thank you for that, Layden. I’ll give you an account balance in a moment. Please bear with me. Another minute passes before he sends me the next message. Your account balance, as of nine o’clock this morning, is $102,349.59.

I swallow hard. Are you sure this is correct? I mean, there’s a lot of money in there.

Yes, the account balance matches. Everything seems to be in order. Do you see a discrepancy? I begin to wonder if I should be honest with Jason after reading his latest message. What if the bank has made a mistake and then decides to withdraw the extra one hundred grand when I tell them about it?
