Chapter One: Healthy Food

This place will take a lot out of you, I say to my wife as I look over the account balances. We are doing very well at our little health food store, but even while doing well the books are a lot to consider each month. We may have to hire an accountant soon just to be certain that we are not missing anything in the store accounts.

Christi shakes her head. We don’t need to spend that kind of money on a numbers-cruncher, Zane. We have employees here who would love to see a raise of some kind before we put money into another position.

A raise? I stop what I am doing and turn around. Let me guess; Sarah.

My wife smiles as she nods her head. You know she deserves one. Thomas does too.

I know, I answer with a grimace. They have both been the biggest help around here over the last year. Sarah and Thomas are both young, twenty and nineteen respectively, and are enrolled in a college nearby. The two of them work very hard for us, often taking up slack whenever Christi and I feel the need to get away for a weekend. We know we can trust them to do whatever is necessary to keep this store running, which is a great feeling to have while gone hundreds of miles away on a romantic excursion.

I was thinking around a dollar an hour.

Yeah, that would be a nice raise, I admit. It really would not cost us that much to give that to them. The store has seen another quarter of increased profits and this means that we have more than enough to give an across the board raise.

That’s fine, Christi replies as she moves around in her seat to face me better from where she is sitting in the store’s office. However, I don’t think we should give the same raise to our two top employees as what the other five get, Zane. That would not seem fair.

I sigh while shaking my head. Alright, so we give an across the board raise of a dollar an hour and then what for Sarah and Thomas?

My wife shrugs her shoulders. I don’t know. Would another dollar an hour be too much?

I laugh hysterically. Are you proposing that we hand the two of them a two-dollars-per-hour increase in pay? This would be a much larger increase than we have ever considered for any of our employees and it worries me that they could end up expecting raises like this in the future. Sure, we can afford to do this now, but will be able to afford to do something like this next year?

Honey, you know they are worth it. If you would like, we could tell them that we are increasing their responsibilities at the same time.

To what? They both already do nearly everything in the store when we need them to. Christi, are you sure about this?

I know you are worried about this, but can’t we just do this for them? I think about the two college students and how different they are from each other. Thomas is an introvert and can barely hold on to the girlfriend he has now. Handsome and sweet on the one hand, he is painfully shy and prefers to keep his distance from other people by working in the back and stocking store shelves. Sarah, on the other hand, is a vivacious, outgoing lesbian who loves to tell my wife and I stories about her dates with other women. It’s a shame, really, that she is a lesbian. I find her incredibly attractive and at times have a bit of a hardon for the young woman whenever she comes to work wearing a thin tee shirt and a bra that does very little to block the rise of her nipples in the cool air of our refrigeration unit.

We can, I answer my wife as I shake myself back to reality. We will do it, but they must understand that no one else at the store can know about it, alright?

Okay. Christi smiles as if she has somehow won a victory over me. Thomas will be happy.

Good old Thomas, I say with a chuckle. The good-looking guy who is afraid of women.

He is sweet, my wife says as she smiles. Thomas is just getting into his prime and that means that he will soon come out of his shell.

His prime? I shake my head as I continue to smile. Mrs. Montgomery, do you have a thing for that young man? My thirty-four-year-old wife adores other men. I don’t mind it as I adore seeing her with other men. Christi is attractive and sexually alive more so than ever before, and it adds to our marriage whenever she talks about being with someone else while I watch.
