Laura Checkley is having a bit of a moment. With the hilarious King Gary returning to BBC One for a second series this autumn, and roles in This Country, In My Skin and upcoming Channel 4 prison drama Screw, 2021 looks set to be her year. We called the 41-year-old funny woman to find out how it feels to be on the crest of a wave.

It’s been a big year for you. How are you feeling?

It’s weird, isn’t it? When you’re in it, it doesn’t feel like that. As a working-class actor, I’ve not had an easy ride. I’m not saying it’s been really tough and “Woe is me” but… I’m 41.
