Chapter One: Not Just a Hobby

Leah, are you really posting even more pictures on Instagram? And on TikTok, too? I shake my head as I look across the patio where my wife is soaking her feet in the swimming pool. The late spring days are still chilly enough that she doesn’t want to swim in our pool, but she doesn’t mind putting her feet in the water once in a while.

She smiles at me, her green eyes shimmering in the sunlight of the late afternoon. After brushing back her shoulder-length light brown hair, she answers, I’ve got a lot of followers now, Dave. More than three-hundred-thousand on Instagram alone. Almost a million on TikTock. Leah has been working on her social media persona for the last year or so with the idea of making money doing so. She finally quit her job as a financial planner last month and has claimed since then that she actually makes more money now than before. However, the idea of her baring her skin to others online bothers me somewhat.

I wish you would stop posting the revealing shots, honey. Like this one you put on here this morning. I turn my cell phone so that I can show her which picture is troubling me at this moment.

That’s nothing, she laughs. You can’t really see anything with that outfit, Dave.

I can see lots of things, I retort. Your nipples are sticking through the thin fabric, Leah. Doesn’t that bother you?

She grins. The pay doesn’t bother me. You know that I’ve been hired to showcase the lingerie for that company, baby. That’s what I’m doing. And they’re happy with the results, which means they will keep sending me more money.

More money, I snort. You were making good money at the financial planning office. Wasn’t that good enough for you? I mean, look around. We aren’t exactly poor and suffering for cash. My wife and I are not without money, but we are certainly not above middle-income. We have our limits as to what we can do financially, and that sometimes irritates Leah. She wants to have more money so that we can travel more and enjoy ourselves the way some higher-income people do. I’m not as driven by that vein of thought, but I understand it. I just wish she would find a better way to make that money than by showing her body off for hundreds of thousands of people.

Dave, don’t worry about what I’m doing online. You can always just take yourself off there so that you can’t see what I post.

But, I’m worried, honey. Some of the people who post their comments are disgusting. Have you been reading them?

She nods her head. Sure, I read some of them, baby. Not all of them, but some. And yes, some I simply ignore, delete, or even block. Some people are just assholes.

Assholes and sickos, I lament. There are guys on Instagram who want to send you dick pics, honey. And even some of the women are really aggressive.

Oh, they’ve sent all sorts of pictures, Leah tells me with a smirk. Some of them look really interesting, too.

I shake my head and sigh. You haven’t told me about these pictures before.

Why should I? You don’t tell me about everything you do for your job, Dave. Not once have I walked into your office here at home and asked to see what you are doing online when it comes to selling auto or home insurance.

I chuckle. Well, I would doubt that you would want to be bothered by that, honey. Most of what I have to read and discuss in a day is pretty boring to most people.

And the same should be true about what I’m up to, right? Look, you have your work and I have mine. I don’t post our address or put my phone number on anything where I post. No one will be coming to kidnap me, Dave. I’m safe. You’re safe.

Clenching my jaw, I get the feeling that I won’t get far in arguing with my wife. At twenty-eight, she is two years younger than me. I’ve tried to make the point in the past that I have a little more experience than her concerning life in general, but even I see that as a weak claim on my part. Leah is a strong woman who does what she wants to do when she wants to do it. When she told me that
