So, what did you find out? my partner Landon Miller asks me as I walk into our office.  Landon and I opened our private investigator firm five years ago after working together at the local police department for a while.  It seemed like the natural thing to do, given that we had honed our investigative skills as police officers but never seemed to get far with the city when discussions of pay raises and promotions came up. 

It was a lady who was living on the other end of town, I reply with a chuckle.  She was driving around the city looking for signs in yards she could pull up.  I mean, who does that?

Landon shakes his head.  People with entirely too much time on their hands, buddy.  He smiles at me as he raises a cup of coffee he is holding in one hand.  There is still half a pot left if you want some, Jase.

No thanks.  I had at least three cups already this morning while driving through that neighborhood.

What’s next? Landon asks. 

I shrug my shoulders.  I informed the owner why his signs were disappearing and who was responsible.  It’s up to him to contact the police department to file a criminal complaint.  When he discovered that an older woman was the one taking the signs, he seemed to back off of the idea of prosecuting her.  There is a city council election coming up next month that has the city effectively divided.  The incumbent is a woman who has been on the council for the last two decades.  For the first time in memory, she faces a young upstart who is tired of the apparent corruption at city hall.  It appears that the current councilwoman could lose her seat, and that does not sit well with her supporters.  The older woman who has been stealing the campaign signs from our client’s front yard is one of those ardent supporters.

Then we have done all that we can do, Landon comments.  Great job, Jase.

Ah, geez, thanks.  I offer my partner a smug grin before we both laugh.  What’s next on the to-do list, then?

Well, you have someone who called and left you a message.  He reaches over to a small pile of papers he has on his desk.  Picking up a small piece of yellow paper, Landon offers it to me and I reach to take it.

Who is this?

A potential new client, he replies.  I offered to talk to her, but she requested you.  She claims that she knows you through a contact you had with her while in the police department.

Is she a PD employee? I inquire.

I don’t think so.  At any rate, she wouldn’t talk to me.  Maybe you can get a little further with her than I could. 

Looking at the paper, I read the name out loud.  Samantha Paxton.  Where have I heard that name before?

You’ve got me, Landon replies.  Like I said, she claims to know you through someone at the police department.  I don’t recall a Paxton there, but then again I didn’t know everyone on the force either.

Neither did I.  Sighing, I tell my partner, I’ll go give her a call and see what this is all about.

Good luck, buddy.  Landon smiles and nods his head as I turn to walk into my office.  Closing the door behind me, I walk behind my desk and sit down as I look at the small piece of paper.  The name seems to ring a bell for me, but I cannot be certain as to why this is the case.  Picking up the phone, I dial the phone number and then wait for someone to pick up on the other end of the line. 

Hello?  The voice is female, so I assume I have reached the woman who left the message.

Samantha Paxton? I say into the phone.

Yes.

This is Jase Sanders at Investigation Services.  You left me a message to call you?

Oh, yes, Mr. Sanders, the woman replies.  Thank you for calling back so soon.  I was hoping to get in contact with you today.
