Admit it, Luca, you want her.  My wife stomps up behind me as I finish buttoning my shirt.

"We’ve been over this before, Jess.  You know that I am not having an affair behind your back."  She shakes her head and walks to the other side of our bedroom.  My wife, a lovely thirty-year-old with striking blue eyes and short blonde hair, caught me laughing with a female coworker at the Christmas party at the men’s store where I work.  Since then, she has mistakenly come to believe that Renee and I have been sexually intimate.

She’s a fucking tart.  I saw the way she was looking at you.

Jess, I reply with a strained laugh.  Why do you do this?  You know she means nothing to me in that way.  We work together.  We’re friends only at work.  There’s nothing going on between the two of us.  What else can I do to help you get over this jealousy thing?

Jealousy?  Jessica grits her teeth as she turns to face me.  Her blue scrubs fit somewhat loosely around her petite body as she begins to scold me.  "I don’t get jealous, Luca.  I get even."  She stomps past me to find her pair of white shoes in the closet.

"Oh, come on.  What does that even mean?  Are you going to divorce me, Jess?  Over the fact that a woman touched my arm?  Shit, if that’s the standard, I could ask you for the divorce.  How many patients touch you, honey?  Have you been keeping up?"

Jessica sits down on the edge of the bed to slip on her shoes.  My patients are sick, Luca.  They’re not looking to get lucky with their nurse.  Besides, she did more than just touch your arm.  Her other hand was on your back and she was giggling with you.

She was tipsy, I retort.  Renee could barely stand after hitting the punch bowl too many times.  You know that.  Besides, why the hell would I dare to allow another woman to touch me at all with you around if not to help her steady herself?

My wife gets up from the bed after tying her shoes.  She doesn’t answer for a moment as she brushes her hair one last time.  Then, her blue eyes glaring sharply at me, she replies, You and that woman have been getting together behind my back, and when I prove it I’ll file to divorce you, Luca.

Seriously?  I chuckle nervously.  Though there is nothing to back up my wife’s jealous thoughts, I have considered Renee to be a very sexy and alluring young woman.  She’s tall, dark, and very sensual when she wants to be.  It’s why she is among the best salespeople on the men’s store floor. 

"If you think that I wouldn’t divorce a cheater, you’re wrong.  Very wrong."  Jessica walks out of the bedroom and I follow her to the living room.  There, she retrieves a sweater-jacket from a hook beside the door. 

You shouldn’t throw around a threat like that so loosely, I chide her.  I love you, Jess, and you love me too.  We’re meant to be together and every time you threaten me like that, I feel as if you are taking one more brick out of our marriage.

She presses her lips together as she looks sideways at me.  You said her name in your sleep last night, Luca.  How am I not supposed to think that you’re screwing her behind my back?  This revelation causes goosebumps to run along the back of my neck.  I don’t even remember dreaming about Renee last night.  Honestly, it doesn’t surprise me, though.  I often have fantasy dreams about other women.  It’s surprising that another woman’s name hasn’t come from my lips while asleep before this Renee jealousy thing with my wife.

I don’t know what to say, I reply softly.  Honey, I swear that I have never had any sort of inappropriate relationship with her.  I have been completely faithful to you, and I think that deep down inside you know that.  You know that I love only you.  We stand quietly and stare into each other’s eyes for a moment or two.

I have to get to work.  I’m going to be late.  Jessica turns and gathers her purse into her hand before opening the front door of our house.  I watch as she makes her way to her car and gets inside before pulling out of the driveway and driving away.  Closing the door to our house, I begin to think about what might happen to our marriage
