Chapter One: A Party Upstairs

So, how are things at work nowadays, Xander? Jeff asks as he takes a sip of wine. Our neighbor for more than five years, Jeff Donnelly has been the sort of guy you have to take in measure by measure. Full of information and quick to begin any sort of conversation, he’s at best mildly entertaining and at worst as difficult to take as an elephant’s dick up the ass. Any young, beautiful interns there this year?

No interns, I say with a faux smile. A few uglier older ladies there, but no beauty queens ready to fulfill a man’s deepest, darkest desires. I give in just a little to the middle-aged man, if only to remove any chance that he’s going to try to draw me into some king of lurid conversation. He did that last time there was a neighborhood party and it almost led to a fight between a couple of other neighbors as he posited on his opinion as to why the Smith’s down the street were having marital issues. The revelation that Paul Smith had been seen on Seneca Avenue with a blonde woman in his car seemed innocent enough, until one recalled that Sherry Smith has dark brown hair.

Well, I’m sure they will get a new crop in soon, my boy. Jeff smiles at me as he lightly taps the side of my arm before turning to speak to another neighbor nearby. Off the hook for now, I turn my attention to my wife Camilla and watch with amazement as she works her magic with a guy from across the street who has just moved in with his new wife. Only twenty-two years old, Nathan Longmire is a tall, handsome man with chiseled features that I am certain had a lot to do with his wife saying yes to him quickly when he proposed their union.

Shit, Camilla, I say as I look around the room. There are others who live up and down our street who know that Nathan is a newlywed and I’m sure they would look with suspicion upon my sexy wife as she flirts with the young man. Still, she’s not one to be easily set aside by such things. My wife wants what my wife wants, and right now she wants Nathan as her next conquest.

Camilla lightly brushes her hand across his, signaling her willingness to engage in an act or two that I’m certain his lovely young bride would not approve of. However, Cynthia Longmire is not in town at the moment, leaving her new husband to fend for himself at a party replete with drunken, horny, and nosy neighbors. With such a lot as ours, he has little protection against the wiles of my wife. So, as she turns and makes her way up the stairs of our neighbor’s house, he follows just behind her like a lost puppy. As I climb the stairs a few minutes later, I can smell Camilla’s perfume still lingering in the air. The young man, clad in his own cologne, also leaves an odor, the two smells combining in a way that I imagine that the two people must be intertwined on a bed somewhere upstairs. As I finish climbing the steps, I hear muffled sounds that lead me to one door in particular. I press my ear to the door and can hear what I believe to be my wife talking and a man groaning as she does. Nervously, I take hold of the door
