Chapter One: Two Men and a Lady

Fourth floor is available, on the east side of the hotel, right? I say as I smile warmly at the woman at the desk. She looks down without replying and scans the computer screen in front of her. I was told when I called earlier that you should have at least a couple of rooms on that side.

I’m not seeing anything over there, she says as she looks back up at me. Who did you speak to?

Feeling frustrated already that our plan could be thwarted by a booking snafu, I reply, Rodney. I spoke to Rodney this morning. He assured me that I could have a room over there.

But those rooms are under renovation, sir. We aren’t supposed to book any of those rooms out for another week or so until the carpet has been laid. The woman looks over at another employee at the desk and asks, Do you know anything about this? The young man nearby, his name tag with Alvin on it, shakes his head before looking back down at his cell phone.

Look, it’s really important. Can’t you call Rodney and verify the room for me? I can feel myself begin to sweat as my nerves become frayed. It won’t be long before Camilla brings her quarry to a room in the hotel across the street from the one where I thought I had worked out a deal with one of the employees. Apparently, I am far from getting what I have asked for as I shake my head and begin to gripe.

I’m sorry, but he’s not on the clock tonight. We are not supposed to call around to non-clock employees unless it’s an emergency or unless it’s of grave importance.

This is a very important room for me, I reply with a bit of a snarl. Shaking my head, I add, I’m calling the national office, I then pull my cell phone out of my back pocket to find the phone number for upper management in the hotel chain.

The woman’s eyes grow wide as she says, Wait a minute, please. She watches me lower my phone. I’ll see if I can get Rodney on the phone to straighten this out, okay? I watch as she picks up the receiver of the desk phone and punches in a few numbers before waiting for someone on the other end. Rod? she begins as she gives me a quick look. Hey, there’s a guy here who says that you booked a room on the east side, fourth floor. Did you do that? I can see by her expression that she is definitely not pleased with the young man on the phone. You know we are not supposed to do that, right? The young woman huffs as she stares at me. Rodney James Davis, you are going to get us all fired if this doesn’t work out. She quickly hangs up the phone and looks at me. Okay, I’ll get it ready for you.

Thank you, I respond with a muted feeling of victory. When I called Rodney earlier in the day, he didn’t want to let me have a room on that side of the building either. However, a hundred-dollar-bill loosened him up once I dropped by this morning to get things ready. The young man was no stranger to being handed a little extra cash for favors, I could see that immediately in the way he pocketed the money without question. To be honest, I was a little surprised that he didn’t hold out for more, but he gave in and I got a promise of having a room on the east side of the building on the fourth floor. Rodney didn’t ask why I wanted one exactly where it is, though I’m sure he would have loved to have known.

How much? the young woman asks as she puts together magnetic keys I will need for the room.

What do you mean?

How much did you give him? Her eyes look up at me and I feel as if she’s scanning my soul to get an answer to her question. It’s not fair that he gets money and I don’t in this whole thing. After all, he could get us all fired for doing this for you.

A hundred, I reply after swallowing hard. That seemed to grease the wheel. My palms begin to feel sweaty as I think about how I really need to get to that room as soon as possible.
