    Chapter One: No More Time

My stomach is churning as I walk into the bank and walk up to one of the tellers. Is Mr. Fennel available? I need to speak with him if it is possible.

The young woman at the window asks, What is your name?

Lucas Worthen, I reply just after swallowing hard. He called me yesterday and told me to just drop by sometime today or tomorrow, so he should be expecting me by here at some point. I just don’t have an appointment. Rupert Fennel is the loan officer at the bank where my wife and I took out a business loan last year. He has been helpful to us over the last few months as the store has had a downturn in business, but I suspect that helpfulness is about to run out. The bank wants its money, and there is no doubt in my mind that this is the message I am about to receive from Mr. Fennel.

One moment. The teller leaves her window and walks into an office door just behind her. She is gone for about a minute before she returns and says to me, He will be out in a few minutes. Please have a seat, Mr. Worthen. She waves me toward a trio of leather chairs that line a wall. I nod walking over to them and taking a seat.

As I wait for the loan officer, I look around the bank lobby and wonder how much money has passed through this building. There are leather chairs throughout the large room, along with ornate maple desks for their account officers and support staff. It’s not the cheap sort of furniture that you would typically see inside an office building or other public place. This furniture represents the shear enormity of capital that makes its way through this bank every day. Wealthy men and women have been made because of people like me who take out loans with less than optimal interest rates, so I sincerely doubt that charity is a part of their business model.

Mr. Worthen, I hear a voice say to my side.

I turn to see Mr. Fennel. Standing to my feet, I reach out and take his hand to shake. Good morning.

This way, please. The middle-aged man smiles at me as he turns and leads me toward an open door across from the teller windows. It’s a really nice day outside today, isn’t it?

The comment has little to do with why I am here today, but I reply, Yeah, it’s finally warming up.

Take a seat, please, Mr. Fennel says to me as I walk through the office door. I do so as he closes the door and goes to his desk chair. I do appreciate you taking time from your busy schedule to come in and see me today. The loan officer puts on a pair of glasses as he looks at a folder on top of his desk.

Glad to come by, I say nervously. Anna could not be here, so I hope that will be okay.

Mr. Fennel nods. I only needed to see one of you. He sighs as he removes his glasses to lay them back down on his desk. Mr. Worthen, I am curious as to where you stand on making the quarterly payment on the outstanding loan for your store.

Settling back into my chair, I cross my arms. Mr. Fennel watches me, and I think that my actions probably already tell him my answer. Still, I need to vocalize where we are. We don’t have the money right now, I confess. Maybe a third of it or so, but not the entire amount. Anna and I took out a loan for our store last year in the amount of ninety thousand dollars. We promised to pay twelve thousand dollars every three months for two years under the short-term lending note’s provisions, but so far we are behind by about eight thousand dollars on the last quarter and the next quarter’s payment is fast approaching. Within a couple of weeks, we will owe the bank at least twenty thousand dollars to become current on the loan.

Mr. Fennel shakes his head as he clasps his hands together on top of his desk. That’s disappointing, he replies. Very disappointing.

But, I think I know where I can get at least some of that money, I offer as I lean toward the desk. We have equipment in the back that we don’t use in the store anymore.

    Equipment?

Yeah, from the old deli and bakery that was there before. I have done a little checking online, and I could probably get at least ten thousand for it all together.

No, the loan officers says as he shakes his head. Putting on his glasses and opening the folder again, he runs his finger down several lines and then taps the sheet of paper. You are not allowed to sell any equipment under the terms of the loan. All equipment that is part of the business is a part of the collateral package, Mr. Worthen. The equipment cannot be sold to make any sorts of payments.

But… I stop for a moment as I think about how I will phrase my response. But, that makes no sense at all. I mean, if I defaulted on the loan, the bank would seize it all and sell it anyway, right? Mr. Fennel nods his head. Then, why not allow me to sell it and pay back the bank?

You can’t do that, he says again. It’s in the contract.

Screw the contract! My sudden outburst causes the loan officer to lean back in his chair and lay his glasses down on his desktop once again. I’m sorry. Very sorry.

I know, he says calmly. Trust me, Mr. Worthen, you are not the first to become passionate about this sort of thing in my office. I completely understand. He takes a breath before adding, I have already given you almost another quarter to come up with last quarter’s money, though. There is a limit to how long this can go on.

I nod my head in understanding. Please give me a little more time, Mr. Fennel. Anna and I will be holding some events at the store that should drive additional customers in. It’s almost summer, after all.

Summer. Mr. Fennel stands to his feet and walks over to a window nearby. Mr. Worthen, I have met with the bank president and the bank board, and they are not willing to go much longer. As a matter of fact, the vote was very close on the matter.

    Vote?

A vote as to whether to begin immediate foreclosure on the business. Mr. Fennel’s eyes turn and settle upon me. The board has decided to give you thirty days to get all of the cash for both quarters, or we will be forced to take action to get the money back in other ways.

My heart races as I grip the edge of Mr. Fennel’s desk. Please don’t take it, Rupert, I say as I use the man’s first name. We were at one time on a first-name basis when we both belonged to the city’s chamber of commerce.

I can’t stop them, Luke, he replies. It’s just business; nothing personal.

It’s always personal when you take someone’s livelihood, I answer as I sit back and cross my arms again. There is no such thing as a foreclosure being sterile and impersonal. This would devastate Anna.

Mr. Fennel turns and says to me, Which is why I fought for you to have another thirty days. The board was ready to take the store from you right away, Luke. Take this as your one out and find a way to get that money. Do something spectacular. The loan officer goes back to his desk and pushes the folder toward me. "Do what you said you would do when you turned in a business plan for the
