    Prologue

Dr. Strauss rubbed her tired eyes and stared through the microscope, trying to focus on the hybrid cells beneath the lens. She’d wasted years of her career trying and failing to make a hybrid of human and animal DNA and was very near giving up. Considering her grant was drying up with near zero likelihood of being renewed, she might as well throw in the towel. But something inside her gut wouldn’t let her give in. She knew she was close to breaking the code, not to mention her stubbornness at admitting defeat.

Her attending had to say her name three times before she heard him and looked over her shoulder at him.

Yes, what is it? She regretted the curt tone, but her patience was paper-thin at the moment.

I’m sorry, Dr. Strauss, but you did say the eggs were ready to be picked up?

She sighed and rubbed her forehead. Yes, sorry Dom, they are on the right in the walk-in.

    Thanks, ma’am.

As the attending retrieved the specimens and then left, she went back to work. Hours passed and the sun had set hours before she looked at the cells in confusion. At first she couldn’t believe what her eyes were telling her.

    Are they splitting?

She blinked and looked again, joy slowly building within her chest. She’d done it!

YES! She screamed to the ceiling, relieved that no one else was in the room with her.

Not wanting to get too excited without further testing, she walked to the deep freeze to get another sample but froze upon seeing a whole row of tubes missing. She looked around the freezer, a gnawing dread filling the pit of her stomach. Not wanting to jump to conclusions, she left the freezer and headed for the walk-in.

    Shit!

Seeing the eggs Dom was supposed to have taken with him still in their tray, she raced out of the lab and ran toward the reproductive wing. When had he taken them? She couldn’t even remember the time, but she feared it had been too long to wish they had remained untouched.

Dr. Strauss forced herself to stop running as she pushed the door open to the waiting room. Luckily, it was empty, and she sped up toward the lab, the technician barely glancing up as she barged in, completely out of breath.

Hey Syl, I thought you’d already left.

No, I actually just had a breakthrough, but I think Dom might have brought the wrong specimens. Where are they?

The tech looked through the files to his left and sighed. The wrong specimens? That doesn’t sound good. He pushed away from the desk and headed for the fridge, pulling open the door and reaching inside.

Syl held her breath as he retrieved the tray and handed it to her. Of the six missing tubes, only three of them remained. Where are the other three?

Inseminated, where else? The man bit his lip, concern clearly showing in his features. What did we put in those women, Syl?

    Fuck!

    Syl, what was it?
