Chapter 1

Dawn comes swiftly in Africa, the transition from night to day happening in a matter of minutes.

At least it signals a break from the mosquitoes thought Jenny as she lifted the fine net from around her canvas camp bed, but they'll soon be replaced by the biting flies! The net offered some relief during the night, but during the day it was packed away along with the rest of her belongings and balanced on the head of one of the local porters. She had to fend off the flies herself during the hours of daylight, small ones, big ones, buzzing and annoying ones, and worst of all the silent sneaky ones that crept up on her to bite painfully.

Jungle or swamp? She couldn't really define what surrounded her with any certainty, Officially she had entered the Likouala Swamps of the Congo, but her idea of swamp was reeds and sedge and sticky bog, not thick rainforest interlaced with standing water. But it didn't really matter if it was jungle or swamp, it was wet, and humid... and decidedly unhealthy she added as she applied a thin smear of antiseptic lotion to the inside of her thighs, right at the top and either side of her pussy. Trekking in such a humid environment had created sores, sores that threatened infections, and considering the closest civilisation was days away on foot, illness or injury were scary prospects.

And it isn't exactly civilisation she reminded herself, just a clearing on the banks of a tributary that fed into the Congo River, a collection of tin roofed shacks that housed hardy shopkeepers, a place to buy maize-flour, salt and sugar but little else. But the settlement did have a radio transmitter, and that was the lifeline to the outside world. But from injury to hospital could be over a week she calculated as she smoothed the cream into raw and tender skin, a very long time.

Of course there was a medic along on the expedition, a middle aged woman called Gloria. Jenny couldn't guess her age, well not with any accuracy or confidence. Gloria was one of those women who could be sixty as easily as thirty. A lifetime in the tropics had turned her skin an even gold, lines had formed at the corners of her eyes, but that wasn't any sign of age. Closer to fifty than forty she had guessed when she studied her closely, her neck looked a little drawn, as did her hands.

Their first real contact had been earlier in the week, the expedition had struck out on foot following their pygmy guide leaving the boats behind them, and it hadn't taken long for Jenny to sense that not everything
