Chapter 1

I should have taken the stairs Joanna told herself as her stomach turned. The elevator had ground to a halt as the lights dimmed, it had groaned, almost an animal sound, like it was dying.

It has died she thought as panic threatened, the lights cut completely as the floor beneath her feet shuddered and shook, one of her fellow passengers gripped the rail that ran at waist height around three sides of the stainless steel and mirrored box, the other prodded every button on a dead control panel frantically, green emergency lights flicked to life giving her companions a ghostly glow, and Joanna turned to her reflection on the mirrored wall at her side and saw wide eyes, her fear clear to see.
