Trapped in the Asylum - Kelly Addams

    Chapter 1

Ashley pulled to the side of the road and studied the map again. The city of Idaho Falls lay behind her. I have to turn in Roberts she reminded herself, then across country to the Snake River crossing. But I don't cross the bridge, I turn left just before I reach it, then follow the road until I reach River View Institute.

Always keen to get a story Ashley had jumped at the chance of covering the strange reports that had been appearing on Twitter for days. They were strange because you had to be quick to actually read them, they tended to disappear within seconds of going live, it was almost as though someone was desperately trying to reach out, and a second person was dedicated to making sure the messages were never read.

The few snippets she'd manage to catch had told of chaos inside the institute, a lunatics have taken over the asylum scenario. She'd tried to call several times, but the phone had never been answered.

I should really have called the police department she conceded, but would she really believe if they'd said the situation was normal and the tweets had been nothing more than a hoax. As an investigative journalist she'd crossed swords with the authorities more than once and she had a sixth sense that could see straight through a cover up.

The only way to get the full story was to walk right up to the front door and knock. But keen to get the story or not she had to admit she felt a little nervous, it was something that had been with her for as long as she could remember, a nervousness when around the insane.

They spooked her, lack of sanity equalled unpredictability in her opinion. She could trace her fear back to a specific event, when she was in junior school one of the pupils, who had always been slightly odd, an introvert type who constantly talked to himself, had attacked her without any provocation. With his hands locked around her throat he had resisted the efforts of two teachers to prise him free. His strength had shocked her but it was the manic look in his eyes that had done the most damage, that was what had truly scared her.

But in the institute it will be fine, I'm sure she thought as she approached the town of Roberts. I mean all the inmates will be locked up or strapped into straitjackets. It was a nice theory, but if her instincts were correct then the patients would be very much in control.

I'll just take it slowly, she told herself as she turned off the highway, One step at a time... and look before I leap.

It was advice she'd given herself before, then promptly ignored, Ashley rarely looked first, it was a trait that had earned her a reputation, she was the reporter who consistently got the scoop.

Because I think of the job and the story before the consequences she told herself, then shook her head. But this time I will be cautious, and anyway it might be nothing, maybe even some kid sending the tweets as a prank.

TO HER RIGHT THE SNAKE River flowed steadily by, this far out it was relaxed, so unlike the turmoil of rapids and waterfalls in Idaho Falls... here it was a stretch of tranquil and slow flowing water. But the state of the river mattered little in Ashley's mind as she approached a left hand bend and spotted a small sign that announced the entrance to the River View Institute.

Well, I'm here, she whispered so quietly that if anyone else had been in her car, they would have never heard over the radio that was playing classic country in the background. It wasn't a music that she particularly liked, it was the only station with a strong enough signal. Every other station offered little more than static. Ashley slowed then pulled over to the left, in through what was actually a very plain entrance, no gates, just a couple of solid concrete posts on either side of a narrow asphalt driveway leading to what appeared to be a series of conjoined boxes that stretched across the river side plot.

Well, this isn't exactly what I was expecting she thought. In her mind Ashley had pictured a Gothic building, complete with flying buttresses and threatening gargoyles, maybe even a few stained glass windows and a bell tower. What faced her was an architectural embarrassment, nineteen sixties dross. It was a building devoid of charm or style, and
