    The voice boomed over the auditorium’s sound system.

    Welcome, Ladies and Gentlemen, to the forty-fourth annual Miss Dairy Princess pageant at the Iowa state fair!

    I held my breath. I was standing in the middle of the line behind about ten other contestants, with ten more behind me, my bright white MISS LYON sash on me. My feet were just a little bit too big for the strappy stilettos I’d borrowed from a college girl I worked with, and I could feel the safety pins in my evening gown cold against my skin.

    Hopefully they’d stay hidden long enough for me to win the $50,000 grand prize that Miss Dairy Princess won — enough for my parents to pay the back taxes on their farm and for me to get an Associate’s Degree at the local community college.

    I saw the girls at the front of the line start walking out onto the brightly lit stage. I thought that my hands might be shaking, but I smoothed them against my dress, steadied myself in my uncomfortable heels, and when it was my turn, walked out onto the stage just like I’d been practicing.

    I took my place next to the girl who’d been in front of me, turned a quarter turn toward the audience, and smiled my best smile. Somewhere above me, I was vaguely aware that the announcer was announcing me: Kelly Duchamp, Miss Lyon!

    I was determined to win. I knew I was one of the prettiest girls there. I got good grades, and had been rehearsing answers to their questions — How could we achieve world peace? for example — every night with my mom in our farm house. I’d practiced by baton-twirling
