The GPS beeped, and the electronic woman’s voice spoke.

Left turn in two hundred feet, it said.

Sure enough, there was the sign, lit by a single light: the Hucow Lodge.

What a weird name, thought Annie for at least the third time that day. She figured Hucow must be the family name of the people who owned the bed and breakfast — it certainly wasn’t a word that she knew, and it didn’t seem to be the name of any of the towns they were near.

Not that they were very near anything. Annie and her boss, Stephen Sutton, were supposed to be going to a conference in Pittsburgh. After she’d booked their plane tickets to the city, she thought she’d made reservations at the hotel where the conference was — only to find, two days ago, that their reservations had totally disappeared.

Mr. Sutton had been furious, of course, and yelled at her before slamming the door. Then he’d completely taken charge of booking their hotel room, and they’d ended up way out here, in what looked like farm country. According to him, every hotel room in the city had been booked — a detail Annie had to admit she found odd.
