Chapter 1

Jenny had taken the loss in her stride, at least that's what most people thought when her grandmother passed away.

They had been close, as close as mother and daughter, and for as long as she could remember she had been like her own mother. Hers had been a life punctuated by loss, first her natural mother had succumbed to the dreaded cancer, but she had been little more than a toddler so she had no real memories of the woman who brought her into the world. Then she had lost her father, but not to the grim reaper, oh no, she had lost him to a bottle... and he had barely noticed as she was whisked away with little more than a small suitcase containing her clothes and a ragged doll, her comforter, the anchor in her life when everything else was spinning out of control, the small and familiar body that she could cling to while her father staggered and swore and broke furniture. Her destination, a place of stability, a place of love... her grandmothers quaint thatched cottage, with the open moors in front and the dark forest behind. There she had grown from a disturbed and nervous five year old to a healthy and confident teenager, and ten years down the line she had finally accepted to let her rehabilitated father back into her life. She had split her time, school times with the man she wanted to forgive but never quite could, and every holiday with the only person in life that she could rely on without hesitation or any trace of doubt.

But she is gone now!
