Return To The Zone - Kelly Addams

    Chapter 1

The virus had never been infectious in its mutated state, at least not in humans.

It couldn't be contracted, not by contact, it wasn't airborne, it couldn't get into the water supply, and it certainly couldn't be passed on if bitten, unlike modern science fiction insisted. In humans it had been clear cut, those vaccinated against the virus had succumbed and mutated into zombies, those that hadn't received the jab had remained... human!

And for a long time it had remained clear cut, a case of either – or.

But suddenly everything had changed. The virus had evolved and no longer needed a human host, it had leapt from one species to another, and during that leap it had become infectious.

Pets had been the first to mutate, millions of dogs and cats had been massacred as panic grew amongst the healthy human population. It was a development that terrified most despite the scientists declaring that there was still no risk of infection, you could no more catch the zombie virus from your pets than you could from the hordes of shuffling un-dead crammed into the quarantine zones.

The next jump had been into the avian world, and most experts blamed the spread on carrion birds. Crows had mutated in their thousands around the globe. Any bird that ate the flesh of dead creatures soon became infected, it was seen as a second wave because birds could not be so easily contained or controlled. Crows couldn't be securely locked away behind electrified fences, they were free to spread their wings, and also spread the virus.

Once again the scientists had declared that there was no risk, but many doubted the data being presented. Maybe it was fact that healthy humans faced no risk of infection, but there loomed a much more sinister eventuality, one that had been largely over-looked, or nervously brushed under the carpet.

Maybe humans couldn't catch the zombie virus, but if every other animal could, then the birds posed a massive problem.

What if the virus jumped from the birds to cattle or pigs or sheep?

With their unrestricted freedom of movement crows could carry the virus to the heart of agriculture on every continent, the food chain would break down, and every human on the planet would be forced into a vegan lifestyle!

Special squads had been established, their role to be high tech gamekeepers, because like their rural counterparts their job was the total eradication of creatures considered as vermin.

These squads patrolled the no man's land between the city and the quarantine zone, much to Jennifer's dismay, because after months of debate she'd decided to give her dream another try.

Since her loss of the sexy shop girl she'd felt a frustration building inside, that girl had been perfect, a dream come true, and what had taken her place had proven to be little more than a kinky distraction. The tentacle mutation had captured Jennifer's body and mind, it was the essence of the girl wrapped up in a most unusual and disturbing package. But that package had been short-lived, within just hours the mutation had begun to degrade. The tentacles gradually withered, the mouths that had been so arousing and erotic shrunk until they were no more than tiny indentations at the tip of each shrinking tentacle. Soon all that remained was the original hand,
