Chapter 1
A week had passed since her own home town had officially become just another region of the ever expanding Zombie Zone. Sara had watched the hysteria on television, religious groups had sited the end of the world, and that the dead rising was written in the Old Testament, a sure sign that all sinners should prepare to burn in front of the Lord.
Churches reaped the benefits of superstition and fear, congregations swelled out of proportion as those with stained souls tried to buy a little good grace before the proverbial shit hit the fan.
Sara was a believer, but she took the Old Testament with a pinch of salt, she certainly wasn't going to stress over the thought of the zombie hordes being followed by four apocalyptic riders.
I prefer to wait for the scientists to offer a theory she thought as yet another heated debate raged on the television. They had been reasonably accurate so far, they'd stated that the zombies weren't insatiable, unstoppable creatures with only the search for human brains filling their thoughts.
And I've proven the scientists correct on that point.
she chuckled.
But despite the reanimated being reasonably harmless there were still rapidly formed capture squads roaming the ZZ, these squads were drafted from the army and police force, and their mission, seek and apprehend.
Zombies were being rounded up and transported to special areas set aside under emergency measures announced by the government. Derelict sections of every town and city were being cleared of all normal life, and fenced to retain the abnormal life that was rising up in ever growing numbers.
Concentration camps.
some branded the holding areas. Those people were frowned upon, the situation was very different, after all no human rights were being abused, because were zombies even human any more? And human rights probably ended upon death, because after all who ever heard of the dead demanding rights, except those legally agreed while they were still alive.
It was a delicate subject, and no one really wanted to stick their neck out too far. In the end it was agreed that the reanimated were very much a grey area and nothing could be determined until science came up with more definitive answers, so in the meantime, it wasn't a crime to cram them into fenced compounds and pretend that they didn't exist.
There were other groups out there who weren't as altruistic as
