Chapter One: Holy Water

Before the world of Realm, there were the gods. This eternal pantheon of capricious beings grew listless and bored. They gathered in the endless void and created a stage where the lives of mortals could play out for their entertainment.

Humans, elves, and dwarves lived out their lives for the amusement of the gods. Each one’s sole purpose was to be a diversion for their makers. Some gods gave these mortals the gifts of steel and sorcery so that they would make better sport.

The Holy Goddess Aria was the only god that showed them true mercy. Her divinity was manifest in the white magic wielded by the clerics devoted to her service.

Outside the town of Ciderwood, nestled amongst the apple groves, was the Temple of Aria. Clerics and paladins had studied at this holy place for generations. Its white marble walls housed several dormitories, a small armory, and training ground. All these had been constructed in the last fifty years to accommodate over a hundred students from the three good races.

The two oldest buildings on the grounds were the library tower and the majestic Temple of Aria itself.

The library tower was six stories tall with a bulbous tile roof. Passing travelers joked that it resembled a penis and took no thought of the thousands of holy books it guarded. A candle was kept burning in the tower’s top window to symbolize the never-ending search for enlightenment.

The temple was a stain glass sanctuary surrounded by marble pillars and adorned with gold teardrops. The Goddess Aria had been the only god to shed a tear for the mortals, and her followers had never forgotten it.

Each of its stained glass windows either depicted the Goddess or one of her faithful made famous by adventuring. The temple courtyard was crowned with a golden statue of Aria and lined with blossoming apple trees. Manicured squares of yellow flowers blessed its perimeter. A blanket of tranquility rested softly over the magic-filled air.

A church bell chimed the hour. Novices that had quietly chatting or reading various holy writs under blossoming trees scurried off to class. Their practical shoes clattered against the cobblestone walkways.

Making her way toward the white marble temple was Pristine. Eighteen years old with a demur bearing about her, she moved with poise and grace. Her brown hair bounced about slender shoulders. A buoyant smile and deep brown eyes lit up her lovely face. She wore a white linen dress that ended midway down her milky
