Chapter One: The Soft Sell

Out of boredom, the gods created Realm. It was designed to be a stage where tales of heroism and hardship could play out to satisfy their need for entertainment. Some gods had a taste for bravery and struggles, while others delighted in depravity and misery.

Most gods would watch from afar, uninterested in getting directly involved in the affairs of mortals. Others would lend part of their power in the form of magic. Aria, the holy goddess of mercy, blessed her faithful clerics with divine healing. Sorcerers were bestowed with mystic powers at birth. Those willing to study and train for years could obtain arcane powers and become wizards.

Some gods were willing to strike a bargain. They would trade their powers with mortals in exchange for their obedience. These chosen would become warlocks.

This is the tale of a young woman and the pact she made.

Vessica Pulpmire rushed through the cobblestone streets. Determination tightened the delicate features of her face. Her stuffy librarian robe hid her lovely figure. Night had fallen on the city. The only light came from the full moon and flickered torches. The ramshackle slums where she was raised were behind her. Laid out in front of her were the shops, inns, and taverns of the Market Plaza.

She passed an older woman hobbling along with the aid of a gnarled wooden staff. A stack of arcane volumes was balanced precariously under one of the wizard’s arms.
