Description
If you’re like me and you’re a fan of short stories, detective fiction and the occult, then a book like The Weiser Book of Occult Detectives is something you rush to pick up at the old brick-and-mortar. So imagine my delight when that exact book arrived unexpectedly on my doorstep one day. And imagine my further delight to see Judika Illes’ name on the front cover. Because, even if you’re not that into the occult, if you don’t know much about the people who write in this genre, Judika’s name is one you’ve seen if you’ve wandered through any bookstore. Sadly, if you’re wandering through one of those chain bookstores, her books are typically lumped into the New Age section and relegated to a dimly lit corner. But any curious bookworm will have undoubtedly seen her name at the bottom of a spine on those shelves, and that is exactly how this curious bookworm first learned the name of Judika llles. Judika is, of course, a prolific scholar, educator and author of several books of folklore, folkways, and mythology about the subjects of magic, the occult, divination, diverse spiritual traditions, witchcraft, and the paranormal. I originally reached out to her to discuss The Weiser Book of Occult Detectives, but as it turned out, that was only a drop in the old cauldron, because this chat took us in all kinds of directions. You might say it turned out to be a bit encyclopedic itself, because we wandered through many pages of the occult encyclopedia, and I think you will dig each and every one of them.
