Jana knelt quietly on the floor of her room, ignoring the creature sleeping in the battered bed behind her. She slid aside the loose floorboard and took out the old pearl-inlaid wooden box.

The box was empty except for a golden ring, not sized for her slender hands. The room was too dark to see clearly, but her tracing finger could make out the fine engraving of climbing roses all around the rim.
