    Chapter One

Sylvia was home from the hospital when the Homeland Security agents pestered her again.  She reluctantly let them inside and led the way to the living room.

Dr. Strauss, we were hoping you would take another look at your notes and help decipher them?  We’ve had handwriting experts take a look, and they all agree that you must have used your own version of shorthand.

She clenched her teeth and looked at her notes.  I still don’t understand why you think this is a matter for your agency.  Why does Homeland Security care about my notes?  I forgot to ask at the hospital about that search warrant. Do you have it with you?

The older agent’s face hardened.  We can get it and bring it back, but I was hoping you would cooperate.

I would love to, but I just don’t see how my personal research notes are your business. Not to mention that I wrote this decades ago.  I think I must have forgotten most of that ‘shorthand’ you say I used.  She took off her reading glasses and looked from one man to the other.  Maybe if you would tell me why you’re interested in my old hybrid research.

Let’s just say we have doubts that you weren’t successful.

    What doubts?

    Who is Marcus Adams?

She frowned but managed to hide her surprise at them knowing about Marcus.  An old work colleague. Why?

"We pulled your phone records, and you sent Marcus a text right after we left you at the hospital.  What did that text mean, Sylvia? It was pretty abstract. The lion sleeps alone. And his response was equally cryptic."

I think I will need to see that warrant before I talk to you again, and it sounds like I might need a lawyer as well.  I find it a huge violation of my privacy that you are reading my texts, when they are of no business to you.

The older agent shook his head and made a tsking sound. I’m very disappointed that you aren’t willing to cooperate, Sylvia.

She lifted her arm to point to the front door.  That is Dr. Strauss to you, and please show yourself out.  This meeting is over.

This time Sylvia didn’t text Marcus. Instead she left her home and found the nearest payphone. When Marcus answered, she told him to go to his nearest payphone and then call her at the one she was using. She gave him the number in code and then waited, drinking some mocha coffee as she waited.

When the phone rang, she answered and spoke another code phrase. Marcus said his response, and she sighed. Neither used their name during the conversation, for both their protection.

    Is he safe?

Yes, he and the princess left together.

Sylvia nodded, seeing that coming. The affection Brenna had for Leo had grown stronger throughout the years. Not even a 6-year separation could dent it, though Syl was a bit concerned about how deeply that affection ran. Would they give into temptation? She didn’t even know what would happen should they have sex. Could Brenna become pregnant with Leo’s child? While it was true that hybrids were usually sterile, Leo was unique. Not that she had ever gotten a sperm sample, so only time would tell. Now she was relieved she had planned so far ahead.

    Did you get the package?

Yes, I put it where only lions dare tread.

Good, did she take her phone with her?

Yes, but she knows not to use it.

Sylvia looked around, studying the few other people in sight. None paid any attention to her. "When she contacts you, give her this number. I will visit
