    Chapter One

When Erin got home, she realized she shouldn’t meet with Cleo outside of their mating day. She feared getting too attached, remembering how the nanobots could relay her emotions to Central. Would she know if she experienced a taboo emotion, and it was reported? Would they arrest her? What would they do to her? She’d only been an adult for a month so didn’t have the experience with other adults to ask what happened. Deciding she needed to get friendly with one of the older women at work, she could then grill her for information.

The problem was that they were all superior to her and wouldn’t reciprocate her friendship. One even told her to stick with her age group. Finally, she tried with someone she didn’t know from a different department. Sitting at a new table in the cafeteria, she smiled at the woman across from her, who looked at least five years older. Hopefully that wasn’t too old to talk to her.

Hi, I’m Erin. I’m new here and don’t know many people.

The blonde woman looked up with a timid smile. Hello, which department do you work in?

    Transportation. You?

The woman chuckled. The whole building is transportation. What section do you work in?

    Oh, sorry, automation mechanics.

She nodded. That’s a good one. Sorry, my name is Sal, and I work in automation logistics. Welcome aboard.

Not wanting to immediately scare her away with probing questions, Erin made small talk with Sal for the rest of the week. Beca joined them at lunch, so the three of them eventually became friends.

Sal’s friendship was invaluable to Erin. She was halfway through her mating years, a topic she’d actually brought up on her own. Erin tried to temper her enthusiasm as she asked questions.

    Do you like your mate?

Sal shrugged. I don’t really know him well enough to say yes or no. It’s actually more of a chore after five years. I’ve successfully had three babies with him, and they’re all in either the baby or child wing now.

Was that hard? To give them up?

Stopping to think, Sal shook her head. I never saw them. As soon as I went into labor, they medicated me, so I didn’t feel any pain and then passed out right before the final push. When I came to, I was in recovery, and the baby was gone like it never happened. I was back to work two days later and back to mating six weeks after that.

Did you miss the sex while you were pregnant?

Sal laughed. Hell no. It was a nice vacation.

Nodding, she took a bite of her sandwich, wondering what to ask next.

What do you really want to know, Erin?

Trying for innocent, she looked at her friend in what she hoped was confusion. Huh?

I feel as if you’re dancing around the topic, hoping to get the answer you’re looking for. Out with it. What do you want to ask me?

Have you ever known anyone to break any of the golden rules?

Sal only stared at first, studying her face. You’re wondering what happens if you break any of them?

Erin reluctantly nodded and Sal sighed.

My first year as an adult, I made friends with one of the girls from my mating ceremony. She fell in love with her mate. Of course she didn’t realize it at first, but I could tell by how she talked about him. One day she was just gone. Never saw or heard from her again. Maybe they moved her to another district and assigned her a new mate, or maybe something else happened. I certainly never found out and definitely didn’t ask. She lowered her voice and leaned forward as close as she dared. Don’t break the rules, Erin.

She sat up straight and forced a laugh. Me? Oh no, I was just curious.

Sal smiled at her. Good, but keep in mind what curiosity did to the cat.

Erin was a nervous wreck for the next few weeks, constantly expecting a shadowy, faceless person to grab her and throw her into a black pit. She didn’t think she was in love with Cleo, but what were her emotions telling Central? She couldn’t control how she felt.

Less than a week before her next mating, she received a transmission and held her breath through it.
