Roni stared out the windshield, searching the darkness for the familiar blue sign that would signal she was nearing the interstate. She’d never had such bad luck before as she’d had on what should have been a quick trip across state to visit her best friend from college. Since she had GPS on her phone, she hadn’t brought a map or any other way to find her way to her friend’s new rural address. Of course that might not have been a problem had she remembered to charge her phone before leaving as well as bringing her charging cord.

I am such an idiot! She yelled at herself again, glaring at her useless phone on the seat beside her.

She was hopelessly lost, not even knowing either Lucy’s address or phone number without her phone. Being in the middle of nowhere prevented her from finding a place that sold charging cords, so she was literally screwed.

What looked like a gas station’s lights appeared in the distance, so she pulled into the lot and parked outside. Except for the dim light coming from within the dirty windows, the place looked closed. She swallowed the tingle of fear and got out of her car, quickly approaching the door and pulling it open to escape inside.

At least it was better lighted than she at first thought, but she didn’t see anyone in the small shop. They did have sodas, and she walked to the back to pull one from the tiny fridge.
