    Chapter One

Meg spun around and felt her world imploding. How did Jeremy know where she lived? Then he held up the $1000 she’d left behind and realized he must have followed her. But how?

I don’t know what you’re talking about, Mr. Pepper. That’s not mine.

He smiled and stepped closer, and she pressed up against the door to her apartment.

    Can we go inside?

She shook her head, her mind racing. There had to be a way to explain, but she knew she was screwed. Why?

I’d like to talk to you, and this isn’t exactly the place for that conversation. Is it?

Her eyes widened in horror at the possibility he would discuss what she did at the Cave where her neighbors could hear. Seeing no alternative, she unlocked her door and pushed it open, walking into the living room. She turned and braced herself, hands balled into fists.

Jeremy walked in and calmly closed the door behind him. He looked around her sparse living room, which only had a loveseat and coffee table. She wasn’t home enough to need cable, so there wasn’t a TV. All she needed was her computer and wifi.

I can see you’re upset, but you shouldn’t be. I’m actually relieved.

Relieved? Had he lost his mind? Meg’s heart pounded in her chest, certain he could hear the frantic beating.

That two women I want are actually the same person.

She frowned and shook her head. Listen, I don’t know who you think I am, but—

Meg, please, I realized who you were well before seeing your hair.

She opened her mouth to continue the farce, but nothing came out. Her breathing was unsteady, and she got light headed. She sat on the couch before she passed out, leaning forward to put her head in her hands.

Please don’t. He crossed the room in a few strides and knelt before her, stroking her arms. I didn’t want to scare you, so I kept up the pretense, but I knew before I made love to you. I made love to Meg, not Spice.

She lifted her head and gazed at him, feeling lost. ‘How?"

    Your accent.

My accent? She repeated dumbly, and then it hit her like a brick. She gasped. My accent.

He nodded. "Yes, it slowly deserted you during your confession of what happened to you as a kid. At first it didn’t click, but then I recognized your voice. When I rolled you over, I then noticed your eyes weren’t the same color. You looked back at me, even with all that smeared mess of eyeliner. I saw you…and I wanted you…even more than I wanted Spice."

He moved closer to kiss her, but she straightened and shook her head. There was no way she could keep her head if he kissed her. Lifting a hand to cover her shaking lips, tears filled her eyes. You can’t know this about me.

But I do, and I want to help you more than ever.

She pushed away from him, climbing over the arm of the couch to get away. "No…no…no, I already told
