Ms. Masters, may I see you for a moment? Frank Burnham asked in clipped tones.

Holly shot Janine a sideways glance as she passed by her friend’s cubicle. Smoothing her hands down her sleek brown hair, her heels barely made a sound as she sauntered toward the senior partner’s office. She was a temp, and only that by a stroke of strange luck, but she really needed this job to become permanent.

Burnham and Wexler was a midtown law firm that handled an array of corporate accounts, everything from Tinko’s Toys to Swanson’s Motors. Holly had the good fortune to be in the right place at the right time when the temp agency she worked for was in desperate need of a last minute placement and she’d eagerly volunteered for the job. She and Janine had become instant friends—but that was over two months ago. Now as she headed to Mr. Burnham’s office, she hoped it wasn’t for a dismissal.

Have a seat, Ms. Masters, he said as he pointed to the chair before his cherry wood desk.

Mr. Burnham was slight of frame, and his silver hair glinted in the sun beaming through the full length windows of his corner office.
