Chelsea stormed out of the building, her blood boiling. Her boss only cared about numbers and statistics. He couldn’t care less about the actual children they were responsible for on a daily basis. So long as this school was highly ranked each year, he didn’t give a shit if the kids or teachers were truly struggling. She was stretched thin with all the classes she taught. Now Donald wanted her to teach another one.
At this rate, she’d have to give up her lunch break just to be able to fit everything into her schedule. It didn’t help that her co-workers were lazy and incompetent. God forbid one of them offered to teach an extra class. That fat ass, Mrs. Johnson, had two free planning periods. There was no reason she couldn’t have been the one to teach the class. But no… Chelsea was stuck doing it. That job offer across the country was sounding better and better. She stopped for a moment to dig through her purse in search of her car keys. Once she had them in hand, she continued through the parking lot.
Each clack of her heels on the pavement only ratcheted her anger. Donald had gone too far, pushed too hard. Now her only choice was to go above his head to the district office. She would have to file a formal complaint against him. Wouldn’t that be lovely? She’d not only be the teacher who complained in a staff meeting about taking on an extra class, she’d be the teacher who ratted out her own principal. God, she was so damn angry!
Clutching her keys in her hand so tight they bit into her palm, she stopped cold in front of her car. What the fuck?
She walked around her car, assessing the damage. The front driver’s side headlight was smashed, both side mirrors were smashed, and the entire thing was spray painted in various colors. The word bitch
was clear across the hood. Chelsea looked around the mostly empty parking lot. Yeah, because whoever did this would be hanging around to watch your reaction, she chastised herself.
She considered going back inside to say something to someone. What would anyone in the school be able to do to help her? Not a damn thing. After her little outburst, she doubted anyone would want to help her.
Shit!
She kicked the back tire, thankful they hadn’t been slashed. At least she could drive it.
All right, think! She took a deep breath and looked around again. There were security cameras on the lamp posts. Whether they actually worked was another question. Her only option was to call the police. Would they even bother to send an officer out for something like this, or should she just drive to the police station? She let out a frustrated scream.
Crack!
Chelsea lurched to the right. She reached out and grabbed the car to steady herself. Motherfucker!
She did not just seriously break her heel, did she? Could this day get any worse? Removing her shoes, she stood in her bare feet feeling alone and desperate.
One thing was for certain: she did not want to be standing in the parking lot like this when the rest of the staff decided to leave. She’d already caused a scene in the staff meeting. She’d be damned if she let them see her like this. Sighing, she unlocked her car and got in. Who the hell would vandalize her car? Up until ten minutes ago, she’d gotten along with all her co-workers and students. The only logical explanation was that the act was random. If that was the case, then why was her car the only one with damage to it? No. This was very obviously personal.
Thankfully, the police station was just a short eight blocks away. She pulled into the parking lot and parked. Her once-pristine car now a sore thumb, sticking out for the world to see. She shook her head and got out, the asphalt reminding her she didn’t have any shoes on. Wonderful. Some teachers kept spare shoes in their car. She wasn’t one of them. Right now, her lack of shoes was the least of her concerns.
Chelsea marched right up to the front desk. The uniformed officer behind the glass, head down, engaged in something that was obviously far more important than her, didn’t look up. She drummed her fingernails on the counter, hoping that would draw his attention. When it didn’t she cleared her throat.
I’ll be right with you,
the officer said.
She raised a brow at the abruptness of his words. Of course. Take your time. It’s not like I came to the police station for help or anything.
At that, the officer finally looked up. Chelsea took a small step back. Holy mother of God! Her breath caught in her throat. His eyes were so green and bright that they seemed to sparkle. He had sandy blond hair that fell across his forehead, giving him the look of a guy who spent his day at the beach. High cheekbones, a strong jaw, full lips. She was totally starting to drool. Her gaze continued down to his broad shoulders, muscular arms and chest. She’d bet her year’s salary he had a six pack under that uniform.
Ah, so you came here to check me out then?
he said.
What? No.
She took another small step back. What’re you talking about?
You said, ‘it’s not like I came to the police station for help or anything.’ I said, ‘so you came here to check me out.’
Chelsea shook her head. No.
She cleared her throat, completely thrown off by this gorgeous man standing before her. Since when did the cops in this town look like that?
Alright.
There was a slight twang to his words, which was both adorable and sexy.
She moved closer, wanting for him to keep talking. He smiled. Oh, God. Chelsea tried to nonchalantly rest her arms on the counter so her knees wouldn’t buckle under her weight. She was pretty sure it came off as anything but cool and graceful. Christ, that smile should be illegal. She guessed it was probably one of his most effective weapons.
"Then why are you
