    Burn Book 1

The airport was even more packed than usual. Crowds swamped the curbside check-in, the sky caps were bustling around and the lines just kept getting longer. Traffic backed up and the taxis fought for space, unloading grumpy passengers and heavy luggage while other cars honked impatiently all around them.

Cara Levine groaned as she saw the lines. She’d overslept this morning and her shuttle had been late. As a consequence she would have to try to push past the hordes gathered near the security checkpoints.

Cara was an old hand at business travel. She could stuff clothes and her laptop and other necessities into one small bag, preventing her from having to deal with checking luggage, a time consuming task. She had her boarding pass already up on her phone’s screen and she paid extra for the privilege of pre-screening so she could beat out the lines. Even all her preparation might not be enough today.

Where the hell were all these people going? The shuttle was packed as well. Cara had long since learned to keep her earphones in and her eyes on her work before a flight but now as she took the earbuds out she began to realize that the other passengers were all excited and dressed casually.

Shit. It was a holiday! Everyone was heading off for the beaches and resorts and wherever else people went on vacations. For a moment envy struck deep. How long had it been since she’d been on a vacation? A decade…more?

    Too long.

Oh well, it didn’t matter. She was going to work and work was what she would do. The shuttle lurched to a stop in front of her terminal and she practically leaped out of the door before the driver could even fully open it. She uttered a hasty thank you and ran for the glass doors.

She was almost there but just then a tall, lean body came between her and the doors. Momentum carried her forward even though she tried to stop. For a moment her feet kept going, she had the brief impression that she must look like a puppet cut loose of its strings, then she was colliding with him.

Impressions filtered in: a delicious smelling cologne and trim muscles, a faint shadow of beard on the cheek rubbing against her own and the hardest abs she’d ever felt against her belly. Her breasts were pressed against his strong chest, her nipples hardened involuntarily — startling her. Green eyes looked down at her through lashes that were thick enough to make her envious.

    Sorry, she gasped.

He steadied her. Her bag was still clutched in her right hand and her eyes were locked onto his before they dropped to his mouth. It was full and curved upward in a wicked smile. His russet hair gleamed in the early sunlight and when he spoke his voice was sexy stirring alto.

And good morning to you too.

I’m sorry. I’m late. Her cheeks flushed. She sounded like Alice, lost in Wonderland! She felt a little like her too, especially since his body was still pressed against hers. It was a wonderland, of that she had no doubt — she could feel a decidedly masculine hardness pressing against her lower belly.

He released her. Cara felt limp but energized. His touch had unleashed a storm inside her body, one she’d hidden for years and had thought she could control. Apparently, she’d been wrong.

Before she could do anything even more foolish she turned around and fled into the airport.

John Kelly watched the woman who’d just literally ran into him run away. The sight was impressive. She wore slacks that were obviously tailored. They clung to the curve of her high firm ass, outlined those cheeks and the long thighs and trim calves. Her shoes were sensible low heeled loafers; she didn’t need heels to raise her ass. It moved up and down under those slacks, making his cock twitch below his pants.

Heading off to a conference on a holiday weekend was hardly his idea of a good time but thanks to her — whoever she was — his day was looking up. He wondered what that blonde hair of hers would look like if it was taken out of that back knot she wore at the base of her slender neck.

These were pleasant thoughts and they kept him smiling through the interminable security line. Holiday goers sighed and tapped their feet, kids ran amok, crying or asking when the plane was going to be ready. John envied them; the last thing on earth he wanted to do was work!

That was the price he paid for taking a new job. He’d said he wasn’t going to. He could do exactly what he wanted to do now thanks to the sale of his two startups and some savvy business investments.

He was wealthy enough to retire but at 30 he was too young, and he couldn’t imagine a life without working. He’d taken the job at Calhoun and Associates for a number of reasons. Not the least of them being that everyone knew that Cara Levine was one of the best on her field and he would have to match wits with her to keep his position.

He couldn’t wait to meet her. He always pictured her as an older woman, frumpy and with thick glasses. He knew that was probably an unfair assumption but he couldn’t help it. There was precious little in way of information about her on the Internet either. She kept her pictures off the web, she didn’t have a Facebook or other social media. If she did anything but work he hadn’t found anything to prove it.

All the pictures of her seemed to be in groups of people in front of office buildings. Maybe she had a wart or something…

He spotted his mystery woman again as he was putting his shoes back on. She was practically racing past. Maybe she was headed for a grand vacation in Europe. Maybe she was on her way to her own wedding. That last thought soured his mood. That surprised him, it wasn’t like him to be so instantly smitten and she was not his — he didn’t even know her name.

They wound up on the airport terminal train together. There was only one small spot left to stand in and so they were squeezed together. Her face showed that she was flustered but in too much of a hurry to protest. His hand steadied her, slipping to her waist, when the train came to an abrupt halt that almost sent her into the burly man next to her.

That ember of attraction grew into a flame long before the train halted at their concourse and they got off. To his delight she walked right alongside him, their legs moved in perfect rhythm. Though his legs were much longer —
