    Passion Book 1

Lisa sighed as she looked at the huge stack of papers she had to file in the next hour before her workday was done. Fucking filing. Lately her predominant feeling was BORED. She was emphatically bored, practically all the time, and filing was the height of her boredom. She stifled a yawn and stretched her arms up over her head. She arched her back against the back of the big black leather chair, stretching her spine. She would need a cup of coffee to keep herself alert for this dance class she was going to after work.

Lisa had signed up for these classes several months ago, basically as a way to combat the boredom she was feeling. For years, she’d toyed with the idea of learning how to dance. She was especially excited to learn how to swing dance. But she also wanted basic dancing skills—like knowing how to waltz. She’d told herself years ago that she wanted to take a dance class but always denied herself… because she didn’t have a partner.

So she never signed up, never allowed herself to do this fun thing that she wanted to do. And then she had started dating Mac. Which had turned out to be a ridiculous failure. Not that anything dramatic happened when they broke up. Actually it was the complete opposite. Around the time they’d been dating for almost two months, she realized that their relationship had grown to be every bit as boring as the other aspects of her life. Just like her boring job and her boring after-work hours spent hanging around her apartment.

But something good did come out of her relationship with Mac, because she finally had the courage to put her name on a list for a dance class series. Around the third week she was dating Mac, the class dates were announced. She’d been wanting to sign up for this class for a very long time. It was an intensive five day series covering five different dance styles, and it always filled up really fast. As soon as the dates were announced, you had to rush to put your name on the list because the spaces were always filled within a day or two. Finally having a partner, she’d jotted her name and Mac’s name down, and was thrilled when she got a confirmation call from the instructor of this exclusive class. Finally—she was in!

Lisa told Mac, and he was not excited at all, but finally agreed to go with her when she managed to express how important this was to her and how long she’d been waiting to join this class. Unfortunately, the relationship reached an anti-climactic end about a month before the class. Choking back tears, she had called the instructor to tell her that she no longer had a partner and had to drop out.

I’m so sorry, Lisa had said. I really wanted to go, but I just lost my partner.

Oh, Lisa. This happens all the time.

Well, maybe next year… Lisa started to say goodbye to the instructor.

No—wait! The instructor was rustling papers around on the other end of the conversation. I think I… yes. There was a single man signed up for this class. He didn’t have a partner, but I was going to dance with him. This will be much better. Now I can instruct as usual, and you two both have a partner. Lisa could hear the perky instructor smiling over the phone I think it’s fate for you two.

Oh. Lisa couldn’t manage to sound overly excited about this so-called ‘fate.’ She hated to be petty, but what kind of a guy signed up for a dance class without a partner? Most women would jump at the chance to go to a dance class, and if a guy wanted to, he should have no trouble getting several women to agree to dance with him. He could be gay. Or he might be really creepy and unable to talk a woman into dancing with him unless she had no choice. Lisa crossed her fingers, mentally thinking—He’s just a nice gay guy who wants to dance. That’s the perfect dance partner really, because you can focus on great dancing without the sexual tension getting in the way. Surely he’s not some weirdo who treats dance class as if it were a way to hit on a woman who has no choice but to spend an hour a night dancing with him for the next five days.

And besides, she really wanted to do this class, and even if the guy was a creep, she needed a pick-me-up. It was worth the risk just to get some excitement in her life. So she had told the instructor that she would dance with the single guy, and then she’d gone back to life as usual. The dance class had been pushed to the back of her mind until now—because this was the first night of the class. And it was time to get ready.

Lisa finished her filing and put away all of the pens and paperclips strewn about her desk, making everything look neat and tidy before the end of the day. Her hands started shaking as the time to leave drew near. It was amazing how thoroughly she’d allowed her busy schedule to let her forget that, after years of waiting, tonight she’d be walking into the dance class.

    Alone.

She had to get changed. The instructor had told her that for the first night she would need to wear a skirt and high heels. This was not how Lisa normally dressed for work, since she was a secretary at an insurance company who rarely saw customers face to face. She was allowed to wear tennis shoes and jeans with a blouse—business casual. She rarely wore a skirt or heels to work, usually only if she was expected at a meeting with her managers.

That Wednesday, she had purposely dressed comfortably and packed her skirt and heels because she didn’t want her feet to be tired by the end of the day. So she’d brought her gym bag, tossing out the workout clothes and putting in a black cotton skirt that flared around the mid-calf, and some black kitten heels that had a good non-slip sole. Now she grabbed her gym bag and headed to the ladies room.

As she stripped off her jeans, socks and tennis shoes and stuffed them into the bag, her heart began to pound hard in her chest. She was actually doing it. And all of the anticipation for this fun class had turned into pure nervous energy. Her hands even developed a thin layer of sweat as she pulled the black skirt over her hips and fastened it at the waist. Her blouse was a light blue silky peasant-style, and it looked nice with the skirt. She definitely looked ready to learn how to dance. The dance theme for the night was a mystery to her, because she’d lost her pamphlet several weeks ago. But the heels and skirt were supposed to be worn for almost every night, so she hoped she was prepared.

Lisa didn’t own a car. She lived near enough her office that she could walk everywhere or take the bus, and that’s what she did now. She waited for just a few minutes at the bus stop and then was dropped off a half block away from the dance studio. She walked carefully—adjusting to the heels was a slight effort since she rarely wore them. But by the time she walked into the studio, Lisa felt that she’d mastered the art of tottering around in the heels.

There were two other couples waiting for the instructor, and Lisa felt instantly awkward at being a single woman walking into a dance class. There was another class already happening, and the pounding music served as background noise in the lobby. That must be a breakdancing class… she thought, trying to remember if that was one of the five dance styles they would cover. If so, she was definitely not dressed right.

She glanced at the other couples in the lobby. The women were all wearing skirts and heels like she was, which relieved her. The entrance door opened and slammed closed, and Lisa turned to look. It was another couple, definitely not her mystery dance partner.

The sweat on her hands returned as she realized that, any moment, her partner could walk through the door and she would be faced with her ‘fate’ for the next five nights. Her heart pounded and she tried to keep her breathing regular. Some of the other couples were mingling and introducing themselves, but Lisa hung back.
