Chapter 1

Rose lay in Mr. Steven’s arms, catching her breath. The dusty smell of the little space behind the stage in the school assembly hall was full of props and set dressing from the upcoming school play: an adaptation of Oedipus Rex in which Rose had auditioned and missed out on the parts taken by Karen, Alice, Maureen and Eve.

There was no rehearsal today, this Saturday afternoon the school was largely empty but for the hockey fields and down at the boat house. Most of the staff were either taking games lessons, or at home, and the students were similarly disposed of. So Rose had texted Mister Stevens, who had texted her, who had sexted him and within a few more exchanges of carefully angled and filtered pictures, they had agreed a time at the usual place.
