Another bad grade. She was going to have to talk to Professor Alexandrov.

Alison threw down her latest sketch in disgust. She was tempted to rip it up, except that she'd spent hours on it and couldn't stand the thought of having nothing to show for it. Nothing, of course, besides the bad grade. She had liked the sketch. She had thought it was her best yet. But the professor just piled on the criticism.

He had a reputation for being harsh but fair. She had seen plenty of the former but had yet to experience the latter. While he wasn't particularly well-liked among the general student body, the night classes he taught for middle-aged and other nontraditional students were always full. She couldn't understand it. Maybe he was just nicer to people his own age.

The only appeal that Alison could see was his looks. He was at least twice her age, of course, but he retained sharp, attractive features, light blonde hair, and a tall muscled body. He probably worked out. She often found her thoughts, and her eyes, straying while he paced around the classroom during a lecture... and then he would look straight at her, and she'd suddenly remember how scary he was and drop her eyes to her textbook.
