      Tessa's Older Neighbor

      Tessa rang John's doorbell and waited, while she tried to push her old crush on him to the back of her mind.

      John was her neighbor. Well, just her parents' neighbor now, really. She had thought she was in love with him for years. She'd even believed they were going to get married someday. It hadn't bothered her younger self that he was old enough to be her father. His age had just made him seem wise, strong, and powerful. In contrast, she had been a slim, pale, dark-haired girl. She still was, though she had grown up a bit.

      Today, she had her first year of college behind her. She finally felt like she was a real adult.

      She wiped her palms on the sides of her denim shorts. She wondered why she was nervous.

      Besides the shorts, she was wearing a simple white tank top. It was tight and low-cut, and perhaps she should have worn something more modest for this visit, but she just hadn't thought about it before she left. Or at least that was what she told herself. Beneath that she was wearing her favorite swimsuit, a striped blue string bikini. She planned to head down to the local swimming pool to cool off later in the afternoon.

      She was home for the summer. She had a few weeks to herself, but she was also going to need a part-time job to earn
