Ashley was bored with her job.

She supposed that not many people really enjoyed their jobs, except for a lucky few. But there was something uniquely horrible about retail. It was a place of deliberate contradictions designed to instill helplessness. She was supposed to act like a shopgirl at a high-end clothing store, but in fact it was a department store in a 40-year-old block-shaped building which couldn't even afford new flooring. The customers who were the loudest and rudest ended up getting the most positive attention from management. She had sales goals, but they were designed to be unreachable, and went up every year even as their door count -- the number of customers coming in -- continued to decline. And if she ever did manage to achieve those goals, the company was in a permanent wage freeze which ensured that maximal effort and minimal constantly-on-the-edge-of-getting-fired adequacy would both achieve the same reward.

So why bother?

It was just a job. She had to find other things that made it rewarding. Some of the people she worked with were fun, and they even went out for drinks as a group every couple of weeks. A few of the customers weren't bad either. The obnoxious ones tended to stick in her mind a bit more, but there were just as many generally pleasant people. And some of the regulars really weren't bad at all.

And here came one of them right now, she saw, and she paused in her monotonous rehanging of clothes and idle despair about her job. It was Mike. He was always an interesting character.

Ashley was an attractive girl, and Mike made sure she knew it. She was in her early 20s, pale-skinned with dark eyes and dark, chin-length hair. She was slim and far from tall, with a narrow waist and small but perky breasts.

Mike was older. He had short dark hair, but it was beginning to gain some gray. He did keep himself in shape, which was good.
