‘If I didn’t love you so much, I wouldn’t act like this’
Kiri gazed at her reflection in the dressing-table mirror. It was almost time to leave for work. She checked her black dress was free of stray hairs. Living Space Design insisted their staff were smart and, although she looked tidy, she wasn’t happy. Her pale face stared back. Tentatively, almost as if she was doing something wrong, she opened her jewellery box. Taking out a chunky silver necklace and matching earrings that her parents had given her, she slipped them on.
Instantly, the funky jewellery lifted the drab outfit. But still she couldn’t shake off her feelings of unease.
Telling herself not to be stupid, that Warren was gone – finally gone – she opened her dressing-table drawer and lifted out her long-neglected make-up bag. With fingers as nimble as any pianist’s, she chose a gold tube. Expertly, she painted her lips a bright red. The feel of the silky wax brought back so many memories – happy memories. She almost didn’t recognise herself. Then, for good measure, she found her eyeliner and mascara.
