      Caught on a Train

      Carmen stepped onto the train, holding a bag filled with all her remaining possessions in one hand and a ticket to the most distant city she could afford to get to in the other.

      She walked slowly down the aisle, looking for a seat where she didn't have to be too close to anyone else. Even though it was only late afternoon, she was exhausted and wanted to sleep through as much of the ride as she could. It was also stifling hot outside, but at least the train was air conditioned.

      When she'd finally decided to leave, she'd left in a hurry. Her long blonde hair was unbrushed and hanging loosely down her back. Knowing it'd be hot, she'd thrown on a light white skirt and a loose tank top. Then she'd taken about five minutes to choose which of her belongings she wanted to keep and which she'd leave behind forever. When she couldn't fit any more into her bag, she left for the train station.

      Presently, she chose a seat near the rear of the car, next to a window, and threw herself down into it. The only other passenger nearby was a dark-haired guy across the aisle and one seat ahead. He was cute and all, but she hoped he wouldn't talk to her. She was done with guys
