Alyson jumped off the number 25 bus and ran the short distance to the Engineering department. It was only the first Friday of her final year and already she was falling back into her old habit of getting to the classroom with only seconds to spare.

As usual, the only unoccupied tables were those in the front row; most of the guys liked to sit at the back of the room. She pulled her rucksack off her back and sank tiredly into the nearest chair, trying hard not to show how much running up the two flights of stairs had taken out of her.

Five minutes later she wished she’d taken her bloody time—the lecturer was late. She pulled a textbook out of her neatly-packed bag and resumed reading from where she’d left off the previous evening. Immediately she felt someone’s eyes on her. She tried to ignore it but the weight of the person’s gaze was almost physical. She turned her head and looked around. There were very few familiar faces, most of her colleagues had achieved their Bachelors’ degrees and left the university. She still had another year to complete her four-year Master’s course.

She had almost done a comprehensive sweep of the room when her eyes encountered those of a bespectacled young man sitting obliquely opposite her. Mr. Delicious Nicholson. She didn’t know his first name but they had shared a Mathematics lecturer in her first year. It had been an extremely large class, the only one that combined the Civil, Electrical, Electronic and Mechanical Engineering departments. Spectacles did nothing to detract from his dark good looks and she had been dying to find an excuse to talk to him. The opportunity had never presented itself. Then he had disappeared and she’d thought, oh well, that one got away.

He smiled and she waved nonchalantly back. He got to his feet and headed in her direction. She watched his long stride quickly eat up the short distance between them and almost licked her lips. His shoulders looked even broader than the last time she’d
