To the Oliver I loved and lost.

    Chapter One

Deanne held her son’s hand tightly as she watched her best friend Nina saunter towards her with her distinctive hip-swaying stride reminiscent of a supermodel on a Paris runaway. Nina must have been pressed for time because her Sisterlocks were still twisted up into the upswept style she wore for the courtroom. Deanne smiled as she imagined her friend immediately beginning to unravel the intricate coils as soon as they were safely in the car on their way home. Nina complained that the style made her feel as though she was in a straightjacket but she wouldn’t contemplate wearing it down in the courtroom—that wouldn’t be ‘corporate’ enough she had explained to Deanne, who failed to see why hair worn down around the shoulders was any less professional than up in an elaborate chignon. It was another of the differences in style choices between American and British women. Among the disembarking first-class passengers who were predominantly British, Nina stood out with her understated, effortless elegance.

Mummy, there’s Auntie Nina! Omar’s five-year-old voice was filled with excitement as he spotted his godmother through a gap in the crowd.

Yes, it’s your Auntie Nina Deanne agreed with a smile, tightening her grip on his hand in case he decided to run to her friend and in doing so impede other passengers. To him Aunt Nina was synonymous with gifts. Deanne hoped that her friend hadn’t gone against her wishes and bought the PSP 3000 she and her husband, Oliver, had decided Omar was too young to have. She waved as she finally caught Nina’s gaze. Her friend waved back and flashed her pearly-white smile which was due more to good genes and a healthy diet than to her dentist.

Hey girlfriend! The American greeting sounded decidedly odd coming from Nina whose cut glass British accent was unchanged after nine years of living in the US. She capitalized on the fact that most baddies in American films were British, sending shivers down the spines of opposing council in court with her cool reserve during the most fraught negotiations. One lawyer had recently accused her of being willing to split the dog his client had raised from a puppy in half, just so that his wife could have an equal share of everything. His client had brought the dog into the marriage, but Nina had argued that with the man’s more hectic work schedule his wife had spent more time with the animal during the course of the marriage. In the end the wife had been awarded custody.

Hi! Deanne responded with a laugh, hugging her friend, who in her flat Louboutin’s was still slightly taller though Deanne was wearing two-inch heeled pumps.

And how is my sweetie? Nina released the handle of her suitcase and swung Omar up into her arms to smother him with kisses. She turned, still holding him, and headed towards the car park, leaving Deanne to grab the suitcase and hurry after them.

So, what did Oliver say? Nina demanded as Deanne steered the car through the fast-moving traffic on the M4 motorway.

Glancing into the rear view mirror to ensure that Omar was sleeping Deanne answered, Nina, I didn’t ask him.

Dee, you promised! Nina retorted angrily. And then seeming to remember Omar, repeated in a quiet hiss, You promised!

Nina, I told you that I would think about it. I have thought about it and I know that there is no way Oliver would agree to it.

How the hell do you know what he would do?

"I know because he’s my husband," Deanne coldly reminded her friend of almost twenty-seven years, her normally even temper quickly rising to boiling point.

I don’t see what the fuss is about. Nina shrugged her shoulders nonchalantly. I’ll ask him myself tonight.

Don’t you dare! Deanne momentarily took her eyes off the road to glare at her friend. Don’t you dare!

They had been friends long enough for Nina to know not to mess with Deanne when she was angry. She immediately changed tactic trying instead to appeal to Deanne’s sense of fair play, Dee, you let me think that everything would be okay. I booked an extra week’s vacation and I’ve already spoken to a Harley Street specialist. I plan to see him on Monday to arrange everything by the end of the week.

"Nina, all I promised to do was think about it," Deanne repeated, feeling guilty that she hadn’t said no the moment Nina had brought up the absurd suggestion, but she had been so shocked she hadn’t been able to say a word. Nina had had to ask her if she was still at the other end of the line. Never in a million years had she thought that her friend would ask the unthinkable.

Dee, it’s not like I’m asking him to sleep with me. All he has to do is jerk off into a container.

Nina, I wish I could help you, but there is no way Oliver would knowingly have a child he had to give up all rights to. You know how much of a hands-on father he is. I know that he will not agree to it and I don’t want there to be any awkwardness between the two of you by asking needlessly.

Are you worried about the two of us or about yourself? Nina taunted.

What’s that supposed to mean? Deanne demanded.

    Nothing, her friend replied hastily.

No, no, no…say what’s on your mind.

You and Oliver have been trying to have another baby for over three years now, Nina reminded her. I just wondered if you felt a little threatened at the thought of another woman bearing a child for him.

"Nina, that has nothing to do with anything. I’m the mother of his three children, I have no reason to be threatened by anyone."

Deanne hoped that she sounded convincing. She trusted Oliver and knew without asking that he wouldn’t consent to donating his sperm. It would have been pointless asking him…and a tiny part of her had worried that in telling him of Nina’s request he would start to see her friend in a different light. Oliver came from a large family and had wanted a large family too. He had at least hoped for a little brother or sister for Omar to play with since he was often left out of the twins’ private world, but Deanne’s body hadn’t yet co-operated.

Hold onto your hat, girlfriend, Nina soothed. I didn’t think you’d be so uptight about this.

Nina, let’s stop beating around the bush. You were totally out of order asking me in the first place. I would have never ask something like this of you.

I apologize. I obviously thought we were closer than we really are.

I love you like a sister! Deanne gasped, stung that her loyalty was being questioned.

Dee, I feel the same way about you and that’s why I thought you would understand.

I understand. I do, Deanne sympathized. I know what it’s like to want a child desperately. I know how much you love Omar and want a son like him, but Nina, surely you can see that even if Oliver agreed—and he would never—things would not be the same.

I don’t see why not. You and Oliver would be here in the UK with your children. The child would be in the States with me, Nina explained, clearly failing to grasp the potential damage that could be caused in future. He would have everything he needed.

Except a father, Deanne reminded her, noting her friend’s use of the words the child and not my child. She wondered if Nina planned to use genetic engineering to guarantee she had a boy—never once had she referred to the child in the feminine.

Seeming unable to come up with one of her quick fire responses to Deanne’s undeniable statement, Nina turned her head and gazed at the cars they overtook in the slower-moving inner lane.

Nina had been a good, if somewhat distant, godmother to the Deanne’s twin girls. But
