Zane swam over to Gabriella. Can I touch you? he asked with narrowed eyes.

Not if you’ve no intention of having sex, Zane.

He growled into the night air and pulled her to himself. With both hands, he pinned her in a warm embrace. Her breasts pushed against his chest and fireworks rang out from his ears.

Gabriella moaned against his lips as he claimed her mouth. He flung his tongue inside and swept the surface free of moisture.

She kissed him back with so much vigour he knew there was something more. With one hand, he held her back while his other hand dipped inside her bikini bottom.

Heat roared through him and he let out a howl and thrust her away.  I’m so sorry, Gabriella. I can’t do it.

Why not? she cried, wiping water from her eyes. You’re keeping me on a leash, Zane.

The oval shaped sign to Among the Flowers Café on Mayhew Ln, Edgartown, came into view. Home. Sweet home. Gabriella flicked her golden tresses away from her face as she turned off the ignition and thrust open the car door. Icy air blasted her face. She pulled her woollen scarf tighter around her neck.

The flight to Martha’s Vineyard from Boston and the drive from the airport through the island helped ease the tension in her head. She checked her reflection in the mirror. Time ticked away.

First thing this morning, her parents phoned. Come home, Gabriella, was her dad’s sweet command. Try as she did to squeeze out the reason they wanted her at home, she could not get her dad to spill. Her lips formed into a big smile. As soon as she got to work, she got Leona, her assistant and best friend to re-arrange all her appointments for the next few days.

Cars weaved in and out of the café parking lot. She looked up. Dark grey and puffy white clouds mingled in the sky. January. An amazing season for her real estate business. Another smile popped up on her face but it quickly disappeared when a sleek white Lamborghini Aventador parked next to her own white Aston Martin One - 77. Luxury ride.

She glanced sideways. And her eyes clashed with a pair of light brown eyes behind the wheel. The olive-skinned man wearing a white vest and a white and black bandana wrapped around his head in a naughty boy fashion hooked her gaze. Only for a few seconds. Enough to make her face flare up. Eye-catching. Thunderbolts hit her insides. And her leg dangled from the side of the car. Even though the chilly winter air burst through her nostrils, the instant flare-up in her body remained.

Oh my, his biceps were huge. Large enough to make her wonder if he had them pumped manually.

A giggle jumped out of her lips. Grateful the windows were wound up, she suppressed her enjoyment. There was no way he could hear her chuckle. Not many men drove around Martha’s Vineyard sporting a vest and bandana. In fact, none did. Not in the winter at least. This man did not know the ways of this small resort island.

With a brief glance in her direction and a quick nod, he got down from his car, shrugged his muscled arms into a trendy black coat, locked the door and jogged towards the café while she stared at his rear.

Butterflies scampered in her belly.

Take a grip on yourself, Gabriella, she scolded.

To her left, two women with two cranky toddlers whistled as the man dashed through the café door. And another young female driver parked by the café entrance stared open-mouthed at the receding back of the strongly-built man.

Gabriella breathed in and out through her mouth. Tempted to get rid of the scarf around her neck, she paused for a moment. The clock on the dashboard showed it was five minutes past one. With quick steps, she hurried inside the café and made a beeline for the busy takeaway area. Her scarf did not make the short journey.

She shut her eyes and inhaled deeply. The aroma of freshly baked pastry and other sweet flavours hung in the air.

On any other day, she would have sat down to a hearty meal inside the warm, decked space. As she turned her head above the queue in front of her, she caught the eye of the café manager.

Miss Gabriella, what a pleasure to have you here. The young man in blue-jeans and black sweatshirt gave her a friendly smile.

Thank you, Chuck. I just want to pick up my usual order – California omelette and cherry pancakes. I’ve exactly ten minutes to spare. Can you whip it up for me? She gave him a cute grin.

He nodded and bowed. The meal will be ready for sure, Miss Gabriella. I thought you came home only on weekends. His pale green eyes shone with surprise.

I do. But I’ve a quick business to do at home today. Are you going to order my food now? Small Island. Everyone knew your itinerary.

He lowered his eyes, excused himself and disappeared through the double doors behind him. She almost giggled at his discomfort. But she caught herself in time. She was not here to chat. Happy Chuck had gone to get her order, she swung around and slammed into the muscled man who drove the white Lamborghini.

Warm liquid from his plastic cup splashed everywhere. On her short burgundy dress. On her tights. And her velvet camel boots and handbag soaked up the drink. She lifted her gaze. The fiercest golden-honey brown eyes stared back. His white vest was also drenched. His tight black jeans soaked up the liquid without trace. For a split moment, both of
