Chapter 1 – Caring for Anya

Every holiday when she visited with her parents Julia would spend some time with Gavin’s parents.

Julia kept some pictures of Gavin on the table just beside little Anya’s crib. In one of them he was in his football gear while the other was their prom night and the other the night of their college graduation.

At two years, Anya finally looked at the picture one day and announced out of nowhere, Daddy! Daddy!

Yes Anya, that’s Daddy.

Then by the time she was three, she pointed on him and asked.  What’s is name?

That is Daddy. His name is Gavin?

Where is he?

He is with God in Heaven.

Why does God have him?

He got sick and he did not get better, so God took him, so now he is now our angel. Anya nodded a puzzled look on her face. Julia thought that explanation was enough for now. She would explain more as Anya got older.

As Anya grew she was hyperactive, always wanting something to do. Just as hyper as Gavin. One day as she watched Anya played. Anya danced with excitement as she said. Come mommy, come and play. She threw the ball and Julia caught it. Mommy do you think Daddy is playing football in heaven?

Yes, and he is probably one of their fastest. Anya chuckled, and Julia smiled. Every time she watched Anya played she couldn’t help but remember Gavin. She had his energy and joy and so agile. She sighed.

***

It was a cool fall day. Julia sat at her desk looking at all the beautiful brownish-orange leaves across in the parking lot. Soon all this beauty would fall giving way to an empty tree. A car pulled into the parking lot, and a couple emerged dressed in matching brown jackets. They held hand as they walked across to the next building. Julia watched them until they disappear from her view.

She wished she had time for a relationship. She was always being greeted and complimented by men about her beauty. But none of them took her breath away like Gavin. She was attracted to muscle steeled men, but none of the men had the features she was looking for. And if they had the physical features, they did not have the personality. She told herself that when she met the right man she would know. Those feelings she had when she was with Gavin would come to the fore again.

No day dreaming girl you have work to do, she whispered to herself. She was glad the new project meeting was postponed. She grabbed some chips from the bag and drank some more grape juice. She looked at her watch. She could be through this and within forty-five minutes she would make it in time to pick up Anya.

Her extension rang. She prayed it was not her boss calling to disturb her. Her new boss was exceptional at micro-managing projects. She looked at the last sentence again absent minded and picked up the phone extension. Julia Russell, good day. How may I help you?

Good day Miss Russell, I am Miss Allston calling from the pre-school. Anya just fainted a few minutes ago; she was unresponsive so we called EMS. The nurse is on the phone with them and were able to revive her. EMS is on their way.

Should I come to the school?

No. Go the Eastern Hospital? Miss Russell instructed.

Julia took a deep breath trying to calm the panic rising within her. She reached for the necklace around her neck; on the front was a picture of Anya and on the back was a picture of Gavin. Gavin, Anya needs your help. Save her. She is all I’ve got of you.

She grabbed her handbag, her jacket and car key and sped through the hallway only stopping when she got to the receptionist. My daughter is sick. EMS is on their way I have to go. She didn’t wait for a response.

She sped to the hospital praying as she switched lanes on the I-85. Please God, you took Gavin. Don’t take her too. She burst into tears as the traffic slowed a little. Gavin! Gavin! I miss you, she cried.  She knew which entrance to use.  She spoke to the nurse and the nurse directed her where to wait.

Within a few minutes, the doctor came out and introduced himself. Miss Russell, your daughter is conscious and you will be able to speak with her in just a few minutes. She has a defective heart and needs immediate surgery.

Oh no!  Panic and fear overwhelmed Julia.

The doctor saw the fear in her eyes. Do you have any family or friend nearby that could come and be with you while you wait?

Yes, I can call my best friend. Is it the same defect that Anya’s Dad had?

What happened to her Dad? The doctor asked.

With tears flowing down her cheeks. Julia replied. Anya’s dad died right here in this hospital from the same defect.

The doctor reached across and took her hand, I am sorry Miss Russell.

He was playing football when he collapsed.

I remember the case. But your daughter is much younger than her father. It is good that we found this out now. The survival rate is higher, the younger the patient. Everything should go well and we expect her to make a full recovery. She breathed a sigh of relief.  A nurse will be out to get you. You will be able to speak with her briefly.

She quickly dialed Ava’s number and told her what happened. Ava promised to be there, to be with her in half an hour. The nurse came and got her. Anya I love you. I will be right here waiting for you. The doctors are going to make you better.

Yes, mom.

As she got back in the waiting room she called her parents and Gavin’s parents and both said they would be there later that night.

Ava arrived with food, drink, blankets and pillows. You remember all those sleep overs we had, Ava reminded her. They chatted and Ava kept cheering her up. After a few hours that seemed like eternity the surgeon emerged smiling. "Miss Russell, Anya is out of surgery
