About this ebook

Book 2 Description:

It was Wednesday morning, and I was headed to my interview with the Vice President of Human Resources at Giovanni Cosmetics. I was extremely nervous and sweating profusely underneath my makeup and designer suit. I turned my air conditioner on in the car full blast in hopes that it would cool both my body and my nerves.

I could not believe that Ken, the man who’d I’d had a one night stand with a week ago, was actually Kenneth Giovanni of Giovanni Cosmetics. What’s worse, he was the newly-elected President of the company and was now running the show. Once I found all this out, I almost cancelled my interview, knowing that Ken probably wouldn’t want me working at his company. I’d already been humiliated enough having slept with him on the same night that we’d met and not hearing from him afterwards. The last thing I wanted to do was allow him to humiliate me yet again by not choosing me for this job. But my best friend Janice had insisted that I buck up and keep my interview appointment. After all, this was the opportunity that I needed to get back on my feet and back on track. So I covered myself in good luck hugs and kisses from my parents and daughter Madison and was on my way.

Book 3 Description:

It was Monday morning, and I was sitting in my office, waiting for the clock to strike 10:00am. That’s what time my meeting with the Giovanni Cosmetics’ Board of Directors would begin. I’d be presenting my first ad campaign that I had created on my own since the Vice President of Marketing had been fired for embezzling money from the company. I had worked hard on the presentation all last week and over the weekend, and felt really good about it. When I ran it by my parents, they loved it and declared that I’d be promoted to the VP of Marketing in no time.

But the presentation wasn’t the only reason I was feeling really good. My ex-husband David and I had gotten together unexpectedly on Sunday, and all these feelings that I had no idea were still there came rushing back. I knew David would be leaving for Spain this week with the chance to play professional basketball again, and he was so happy about it. Seeing him that happy, along with him being so excited for me and my new Marketing Director position, brought back the good memories that I had of us when we were still together. So the possibility of our family reuniting, along with the fantastic ad campaign that I’d created, had me floating on cloud nine.

As I surfed the web and waited for my meeting to begin, an email popped up from Rick Barnes, the company’s Chief Financial Officer. Rick and I had developed a really nice rapport; one that Ken seemed quite jealous of. But ever since I’d slept with Ken again the weekend before starting my job, not to mention the conversation I’d overheard one of Marketing Coordinators having about sleeping with him, I’d been keeping my distance and remaining professional. Ken tried to talk to me on several occasions about things, but I blew him off as cordially as I could and told him that our relationship would remain strictly business from here on out.

Chapter 1 - May Luck Be On My Side

I pulled up to the parking lot of Giovanni Cosmetics’ massive headquarters. A security guard standing in a booth stopped me and asked for ID, then called up to human resources to confirm my appointment. Fancy, I thought to myself as the guard lifted the gate and directed me toward a guest parking space. I parked my car, said a quick prayer, took a deep breath and headed into the building.

The Giovanni offices were breathtaking. Floor to ceiling windows, dramatic modern artwork, posh leather furniture and tons of glass accents filled the marble lobby area. I registered with the security desk and was sent up to the tenth floor where the human resources department was located. As I rode up in the elevator, I thought that my thumping heart would explode in my chest. I swallowed profusely and hoped that I would not run into Ken.

When I arrived on the tenth floor, the receptionist greeted me and told me to have a seat while she called Beth Stone, the Vice President of Human Resources. I sat on the edge of the chair, unable to sit back and relax, and pretended to thumb through a magazine. But all I was really doing was staring down the hallway out of the corner of my eye for any sign of Ken. I was relieved when Beth, a tall, thin, attractive older woman, came walking toward me with a welcoming smile and led me to her office.

My interview with Beth lasted for over an hour, and I aced it. She was so fascinated with my back story, and how my parents were once the owners of Simone Cosmetics. Beth said that with my focused degree, extensive experience and savvy marketing techniques, she thought I’d be a shoo-in for the Marketing Director position. She also expressed that with the young new President just being named, the company was looking to go in a fresh, unique direction and wanted to bring in some new blood to help achieve that goal. I tried my best to hold my composure every time the subject of Ken came up. All I had to do was think about what this job meant to my future, and that helped tremendously. By the time the interview was over, Beth and I seemed like old friends. She even shared with me that just between us, all of the other candidates had been stale snooze fests, which made me smile happily.

Then Beth did something completely unexpected. She called the Vice President of Marketing, Jacob Blair, and asked if he had time to meet with me right then and there. Both Beth and Jacob and been with the company for many years and they had a great rapport, so she felt perfectly comfortable asking him for this favor. Plus Beth said that she didn’t want me to get snatched up by another company, which I thought was so flattering. I feared that Beth would also want me to meet Ken. But she made it clear that I would be working closely and directly with Jacob and his team, and that it was the Vice Presidents of the company who had the main contact with the President. Those words were music to my ears.

Jacob Blair entered Beth’s office and approached me with his hand extended. He was a short, distinguished, pleasant looking older man with a head full of white hair and expensive taste in suits. We shook hands and sat down, and the first thing Jacob said to me was that thus far, he’d hated all of the candidates that he’d interviewed. I was too taken aback to laugh, but he and Beth burst into giggles. Jacob said that at this point, Beth knew exactly what he was looking for. So the fact that she’d called him up to meet me on the spur of the moment meant a lot. He quickly scoured over my resume and was also impressed with my background at Simone Cosmetics. He asked what I’d considered my biggest accomplishments to be, and I showed him some of my most successful marketing campaigns. Jacob loved them all and said I’m exactly what Giovanni Cosmetics’ marketing department needed in order to take the company to the next level.

Beth asked when I could start, and I told her immediately. She and Jacob were both visibly excited, as was I. Since marketing was now the company’s most crucial department considering they were looking to do an image overhaul, everyone was anxious to hire a Director and get started on a new ad campaign as soon as possible. Beth assured me that I would hear from her tomorrow. I shook hands with her and Jacob and expressed how much of a pleasure it was meeting them both, and that I was looking forward to hearing from them tomorrow.

    I left Giovanni
