For years, author, illustrator and now screenwriter Alice Oseman (she/they) has provided LGBTQIA readers with a safe space within her graphic novel series Heartstopper, amongst other queer-centred novels. While the story follows the MLM (men-loving-men) teen romance between Charlie and Nick, the series is full of lovable characters, such as Elle, a trans girl who is navigating transferring to an all-girls school, and lesbian power couple, Tara and Darcy, who allow even more to feel seen.
Many happy gay tears have been shed since the adaptation announcement was released. The cherry on top of the cake was that Alice was taking on the role of executive producer and scriptwriter, so this story was in her safe hands. When the cast was revealed with Yasmin Finney playing Elle, Corinna Brown as Tara and Kizzy Edgell as Darcy, we fans were all in agreement that the casting director deserves an award.
