I didn’t feel that I could contest Jordan’s decision.  After all, this was his house—his family. And something had obviously upset him. 

If he wanted to go, I was ready to follow him. 

On the drive back to the Chateau, I asked Jordan further about what had happened—what his father had said to upset him so much. But Jordan wouldn’t answer.  He deflected my questions with pat, empty phrases:

Families—they’re all crazy, right?
