Niall pulled off the coast of Galway, headed through the bay to where the fish congregated beyond the rocks. Water curled along the flanks of his boat, frothing in lacy configurations as the prow sliced the sea. As the young Irish fisherman had come to expect, a grey seal played about in his wake. It had been that way for many mornings. When he set out to sea, the seal followed, splashing in the waves, dancing beneath the water, now and again popping its head up to regard him with curiosity.

The seal was a female; he could tell from her size and elegance. Her smooth coat was burnished copper and brass, gleaming wet whenever she broke the surface. When she drew alongside, her limpid eyes connected directly with Niall’s. Their pure blackness was at once alien, and deeply appealing. Those eyes entranced, watching him with clear, uninhibited interest. The seal’s body twisted in the waves, each movement sensuous
