    Chapter One: Laying the King’s Son to rest

    I tried to hold back my tears as I laid a single rose against the coffin that held, Tomas, the prince. He had been slain by the dragon he was meant to defeat. All the lore had been wrong. And I felt like I had lost a son.

    I might as well have. I had been his nanny and wet nurse as the Queen died in child birth. I was only eighteen when I moved to the castle. He and the king kept me on as a nurse, but really they didn’t need to. They only did it because of how Tomas had grown attached to me.

    He was sixteen and now he was dead. I didn’t know what I was going to do.

    I wasn’t ready to leave his side. I felt as I did many of those nights as I nursed his fever, or comforted him when he had bad dreams. I was sure he would wake up. Sure of it.

    But he wouldn’t. Parts of me knew that. He was dead inside and about to be buried.

    Tears stung my eyes and I bent down to kiss the coffin. In my hand I squeezed my rosemary bead. I felt a hand on my shoulder and knew from the powerful grip it was Alder, the King. Forgive me, my Lord. I choked out.

    There is no need for forgiveness. He whispered against my ear and I felt a shiver. His voice was sweet, yet strong. I looked up into is handsome face. Alder wore his crown, and his regal robes, but his face was one of deep grieve. His usual sparkling blue eyes were dull, sad. I didn’t know how he would get on without Tomas or who would inherit the throne, but I knew my time in the castle was just about up.

    I nodded my head and when he offered me his hand, I took it. I was surprised by his gesture, but perhaps I shouldn’t have been. He had always been kind to me. I knew he could be a fierce, angry ruler when necessary, but to me he had only ever
