Just remember everything I taught you and you’ll be fine, Edwina said.

Liliana looked at the chubby, older serving maid standing beside her, but said nothing and simply nodded her head to show she understood. She wasn’t even sure she could get any words out as the nerves beset her and her trembling grew worse. Her first time serving royalty was upon her and she felt the clamminess on her palms as they waited to go into the great hall of the palace. Things were made all the worse by the fact they would be serving the king’s table and she inhaled deeply. It didn’t go unnoticed.

Don’t let me down, child, Edwina said.

Liliana put a smile on her face when she glanced at the older woman, but was sure it looked grim. She wiped her hands on her apron as the wait went on and it finally came to an end when the sound of the fanfare trumpets rang out. Edwina picked up the large tray from the table beside them immediately.

Go, she urged when the blaring sound of the fanfare ended.

Liliana sucked in another deep breath before pushing the large doors open and it was her that led the line of maids inside the hall. The murmur of voices grew louder as the attention of the assembled guests turned to them, but she kept her gaze on the floor as she made her way towards the top table. She came to a stop when she got to it and turned around to the woman following her. Reaching out to the tray, she picked up a plate and let out a slow breath before speaking.

Excuse me, my lord, she said in a loud voice then stretched her arm past to put the plate on the table in front of him.

She moved along to the next person and did the same, as she and Edwina went about attending the most important guests in the hall. They made their way along the table until there were only a couple of plates left on the tray and Liliana began to relax. Her lack of attention was to cost her dear as she went to serve the king’s niece, Beatrice.

Excuse me, my lady, she said once more and started to reach forward, without checking first.

Beatrice was already leaning across to speak to the person next to her and the plate brushed against her shoulder. Suddenly things seemed to move in slow motion as Liliana’s grip on the plate slackened. It tipped up to spill some of the meat into the lap of the sitting royal and she knew she was in trouble when she heard the furious, screeching cry.

You stupid, clumsy oaf, Beatrice yelled as she leapt to her feet. You’ve ruined my dress.

Liliana froze as she watched chunks of beef fall to the floor from Beatrice’s lap and there was no missing the dark stain on the pretty, pink silk. The sudden silence in the hall was ominous and it sparked her to react. She grabbed the cloth from the pocket in her apron and stepped forward. Her hands were slapped hard when she reached out and the sound of another shrieking cry pierced the quiet. It made her back off and she watched in dread as the king’s niece furiously stamped her feet like the spoilt child she was.

I want this incompetent wastrel punished, Beatrice squealed in a high-pitched voice and stamped her feet again.

Liliana saw enraged eyes settling on her and backed off another step.

Uncle, Beatrice shrieked. Did you hear me?

Liliana glanced towards the king and saw his harsh gaze fall on her. It made her look down to her feet. Everyone in the palace knew he doted on his niece and that he would bow to her wishes. The sound of his voice rose above the din of furious yelling.

Take her out, he said.

I want her punished properly, Beatrice yelled before storming off in the direction of the entrance to the hall.

The murmur of noise rose as two guards approached Liliana and she looked towards Edwina. The tight-lipped grimace on the older woman’s face turned to one of sympathy, but there was nothing she could do now. Any attempt at an intervention would get her punished as well and she wasn’t about to take the risk. One of the guards grabbed Liliana’s wrist, while the other went across to speak to the king.
