I stumbled into the smoky saloon, praying that Boone and Atticus would be there. I breathed a sigh of relief as my eyes adjusted to the dark and I could see them in the corner, a bottle of whisky in front of them.

Ignoring the stares of the other patrons who were probably wondering what a woman like myself was doing in a place of ill repute, I quickly walked over to them. Boone noticed me first, and a grin quickly appeared as he turned to face me, knocking Atticus with his elbow to alert him.

Well, look who we have here! It’s been a while since we’ve been graced with your presence, m’lady.

He always spoke to me in a half serious, half sarcastic southern drawl that drove me wild. Just being next to them once again was making me more relaxed.

Atticus must have noticed something in my expression, because instead of greeting me he leaned forward with a serious expression.

I smiled nervously. Is it that obvious?

Now Boone was looking concerned as well.

Well go on then, what is it?

It’s my father. I know a lot of people he knows have seen us hanging out, and he would never allow me to be with you fellows. You know I want to stay with you both desperately, but he would never allow it unless...

My voice trailed off, as I was too nervous to complete my sentence. Boone leaned forward and gestured with his hand, as if telling me to continue.

I took a deep breath.

Unless... I was pregnant. Then he would have no choice but to let me live and travel with you guys, and I can do everything for you and we can live happily ever after.

Boone stared at me with a blank expression for a moment, before bursting out in uproarious laughter. I blushed heavily, and tried to fight the urge to run away in shame. I placed one hand on the saloon bar and looked them both in the face pleadingly, searching for any sign of agreement.

Boone laughed and reached for the bottle of whiskey, pouring a shot and bringing it up to his handsome face. My father would kill me if he knew I was in a saloon, let alone talking to Boone and Atticus, two notorious outlaws. Ever since I befriended them, my life has been an adventure. I never wanted it to end, but in such a small Texas town I knew it was only a matter of time before word got back to my father, and he would put a stop to everything.

After taking the shot, Boone looked me in the eyes.

Well, you’re a pretty little lady, and me and Atticus have taken a likin’ to you, but you’re a virgin and you barely have any time alone. Besides, are you sure he’ll let you live with us if you’re with child?

I nodded my head rapidly.

Atticus spoke up.
