Maggie moved to the side of the wooden boardwalk, but a passing stagecoach stopped her from crossing the dusty street and by the time the horse drawn vehicle was out of the way it was too late to escape.

Maggie looked around, but there was no one else in view. That didn’t matter anyway. She suspected no one would come to her assistance even if they did see what was going on. The thuggish behavior of the three friends was well known and it meant no one in town was likely to challenge them. Everyone was aware it was best to keep out of their way, but that wasn’t an option for her now.

The man still leaned casually against the wall of a building, but he pushed himself away from it as he was approached. He brushed
