    Malik Seif had been raised to see himself as better. More than. Superior for his intellect, his inherent maleness, his birthrights—which, at the time, were as meager as a handful of car dealerships and now amounted to little more than debt—and his pride. It had taken a friend in high school to literally punch the worst of his arrogance out of him, particularly when Derick had admitted, quietly and in private after their scuffle, that he was gay, and then asked with more pride than Malik had ever possessed if that made him less than now.
