    Chapter One

I glanced up at the clock behind the counter. The clock hands read 10:56. Eleven o’clock had become the highlight of every weekday. It was precisely that time when Emmett Jacobs would come into the small sandwich shop where I worked and ordered a cup of soup and a tuna sandwich. He always sat at the closest table to the counter and would engage me in wonderful conversations while he picked at his food and I pretended to work.

Our chats were always lovely and ranged from sports to movies to travel and everything else under the sun. The only thing we never discussed was our personal lives. So while I knew his personality, I knew next to nothing about his actual life. Heck, the only reason I knew his name was because I had seen it on his credit card and he saw mine on the chunky plastic name tag attached to my white apron.

He never finished his lunch and didn’t even seem to particularly enjoy it. It was very peculiar and I often wondered, out of all the delis downtown why did he choose this one? The sound of the door chime snapped me back from my daydreaming and I watch as my lunchtime crush walked through the door. He smiled and greeted me as he always did.

Good morning Ellie, I hope you are having a wonderful day today.

I wanted to tell him that any day I got to see him was a wonderful day but I was far too chicken. I had quite a fondness for him and fantasized about the two of us playing house. But I was pretty sure I was just the sweet chubby clerk to him. He was devastatingly handsome and by the way he dressed I assumed he was quite wealthy. And I had seen him park at least three different cars outside of the shop over the last few months. The cost of just one of those cars would keep me fed, clothed, and housed for years.

Oh you know same old same old Emmett, I replied.

"Ellie, this should be a special day for you. It is your birthday after all.

    "It’s just another day
